Ughhhhhhhhmy dad semi-crashed his bike (No injuries, don't worries)

Now i understand that the VAST majority of NYSpeed is NOT into Harleys/Hogs at all…but you do all for the most part have the ability to appreciate a nice, expensive, classy/clean machine…and that’s exactly what this bike is. This isn’t a HUGE deal…but to him/me, it is because in 9 years/over 50,000 miles this is the first incident ever.

My dad has a 2000 Harley Heritage Softtail Classic in Pearl white, all chromed out, big white walls, gorgeous…for those into Harleys, it’s a head turner that’s to date probably cost upwards of $27,000 with all upgrades. He was riding with his friend Frank who has a 2009 Road Glide with a custom numbered paint job…easily pushing $30,000.

They were making a right on red, my dad on the right, Frank to his left…Frank began to take off but then second guessed his decision because he couldn’t tell how fast the car was coming from their left, and abruptly stopped…but my dad couldn’t stop his in time, and ran right into the back/side of Frank’s bike. Apparently this isn’t the first time Frank has thrown my dad off by second guessing a decision with changing direction/speed abruptly without warning…and Frank knows it too, so neither are blaming the other/holdign the other responsible for damages…both real cool guys.

Damage to Frank’s bike:

Right side hard saddle bag ripped clean off, stripping the holes it mounts up with, and scraping up the new, expensive, numbered paint job.

Damage to dad’s we’re worried may be a bit more severe:

Front engine guard is what hit Frank’s bike…and to give you an idea how hard it hit…it’s over an inch thick steel, and it bent…it bent far and bad, and we’re thinking it may have bent the frame itself a bit. It bent into the left foot pad too so much that it raised the pad enough to not be able to get his toe under the shifter, the bike’s near impossible to ride.

Some pics of shot engine guard…i guess they’re only meant to hold the weight of the bike if you drop it to the side, not if you side-swipe something:

And here’s where we’re concerned…where it mounts to the frame:

Hard to see with the shitty cell pic, but that bolt attaches the guard to a piece of metal that’s welded between the two tubes of the front frame…and is supposed to stick out a bit, but is now pushed flush against the frame itself, and we can’t tell if it’s just our eyes or if the frame itself is actually bent a bit :frowning:

He’s looking on the bright side though…they were pulling into oncoming traffic…had the crash propelled either of them forward into the turn that they were too late to actually make by the time all this went down, the car coming from the left that they would have had time to turn in front of would have by that time been coming barreling down on them. No injuries to anything but the bikes…so that’s a good thing for sure.

More pics of damaged guard:

This is on the side where it was actually hit, where it mounts at the bottom:

And the other side got jacked a bit too from being pulled over/forward…

Glad hes ok… things definitely could be worse…

Theres 2 types of riders… dot dot dot.

Anyway… “space cushion” with 50k miles he should have had a bigger one, or atleast been paying more attention…

The bike can be fixed… hopefully he had full coverage and that can be a what if/worst case scenario…

Nice bike btw.

The fame looks fine. The mounting tabs bend pretty easy. Even if the bike is set down. I tweaked the frame on my 58 panhead, but it was a hard tail and ridden hard. The only reason I knew was the primary would not line up. That bike Is fairly simple to get motor and trans out of.
Make sure front and rear tire line up
Make sure belt lines up with motor.

^^^+1. The guards, pegs and associated mounting points will usually give before the frame actually does. Kinda comparing apples to oranges but when I dumped my 73tx 750 I bent the hell out of the guards and the brackets they mounted to. One shifter later the bike was good to go and everything lined up. Hope thats the case for your dad as well.

Nice looking bike

Took it to a friend, frame is fine. I came home from work tonight to see a pile of tools around the front of the bike…he used a clamp to pull back out that center mount for the guard, and the new guard is already on

Only thing he didn’t get to it looks like was putting the highway pegs back on…

 glad to hear.
