Americas is the word used when referencing the N and S American regions. Americans is the word used when referencing people from the country called The United States of America. People from Canada are not called Americans, even though their country is located in North America. He should have said asian countries, not “the asians”. Also we do not refer to the countries of europe as “The Europeans”, we refer to them as european countries or simply “europe”. Just as when your uncles was talking about our national debt being owed to several countries located in asia, he should have said asian countries, or more specifically named the actual countries…The wording he selected comes off in a negative tone towards those countries and sounds prejudice, which is the word I should have used instead of racist.
But your uncle’s point of tariffs is pretty valid it’s certainly an effective and logically sound idea, however I don’t think it’s a solution. And while I can’t really word this point properly right now I’ll use this example that AWDrifter posted.
If you impliment big tariffs on something like an iPod to the point where it costs $3,000…that means that in order for the American industry to make, sell, and profit from an iPod made in America of the same “quality” it would have to cost $2,999. Which means the price of everything would either skyrocket or the quality of everything would hit the fucking basement floor. Honestly I think it’s more bennificial to the country and global economy to have a serious “talk” with the American worker and explain that 1 family member working semi-skilled labor just isn’t going to support a family of 4 in 2005 at the middle class level.

America certainly doesn’t owe individual people in asian countries billions of dollars, America owes it to the governments of those countries. Therefore when talking about who holds the debt of this country, we talk about those countries, not the people of the countries. As a result we talk about money “Owed to asain countries” not money “owed to the asains”
My point is that it is not a racial thing, at all. I don’t care who owes who money… calling someone or someplace Asian is not racial and shouldn’t be treated as such.
This is true…although there will always be a need for unskilled and semi-skilled labor, but it needs to be made clear that it’s not going to be enough to support an average american middle class family. The republicans can’t do this becuase they don’t want to have to fund the government programs necessary to make a transistion like this…and the democrats can’t do this because they can’t get elected (come to think of it I doubt anyone could get elected doing this) without the labor vote.
It would be nice if we could have a serious debate in this country about issues like this instead of abortion & elective wars. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen (although hopefully the abortion shit will be over on a national level if the USSC overturns Roe v. Wade, which would be the best thing to happen to my party since JFK and the worst thing to happen to the republicans since Nixon scandal)…
