Hey guys, I’m looking to get Verison Fios at my house and I’m not sure how fast I need the service to be. I download a lot of movies and music, and play a decent amount of games online.
I’m debating between going with the 15MB/5MB and the 50MB/25MB packages. Would the 50/25 ever come in handy, or is that a bit overkill? I’m assuming the numbers they list are download/upload speeds, but I’m not entirely sure.
The second package is considerably better than the first. Your downloads will complete much faster, and there is no chance you’ll have any lag/connection issues during online gaming, with the second one.
If the price difference isn’t huge, I’d go with the second option.
It’s only a $10 price difference, just based off the numbers I figured it’d be significantly better but I don’t really have a frame of reference. Whenever downloading a movie/tv show/whatever I’ve rarely exceeded speeds of 1 or 2 MBPS so I wasn’t sure if anything more than the basic package would be necessary.
I feel like 50/25 could definitely be a little overkill but ive bottomed out 15/5 on many occasions and I wouldnt really say im a heavy user compared to some people.
You are confused by the difference between a byte and a bit. Internet connection speeds are advertised in bits, downloads are typically measured in bytes. There are 8 bits in 1 byte.
I’ve got 50/25 with FIOS and pull 58 down, 25 up on speedtest.net if I pick a really fast server like NYC. I’ll see 6.9 to 7 MB/s from usenet, which works out to about 55Mbps.
A 4.9 GB “data file” took 12 minutes and 3 seconds averaging 6.9 MB/s according to my usenet downloader logs.
Google needs to step up their game and bring us Fiber. We’re high up on the list of future cities to have it, but who knows when that’ll actually happen.
In the growing need for faster connections, though, I would imagine Google would be beneficial, especially because a lot of banking corporations are centralized out of wny area.
But, I’m going to assume that you work for timewarner, so I’ll take your word for it lol
Running fiber to a business is one thing wiring an entire neighborhood is a money pit.
If you’re a large company and need fiber companies will work things out. Take yahoo for example which decided to build in the middle of no where they ended up getting diverse entry fiber from a number of carriers at the bandwidth they needed(Multiple 10Gb wave lenghts)
