Hey there guys,
I found this 1991 240SX for sale on Autotrader for $2499. The car has 270000 km, and when i called them I was told that it is in really good condition, but he said that there is some rust in the hatch, but thats it, no rust anywhere else. Has any of you guys checked the car out. And also, do you think it’s a good car to be an everyday driver.

Heres the link

In my search for a 240 i went and saw that car last week before it was posted in the trader. The roof just in front of the moonroof has some spots that are rusted because of missing paint, the hood has some spots, the hatch is rusted and the drivers door has a good chunk of rust under the paint that has cracked and started to peel just below the window. Last but not least from what i saw the rear wheel wells had holes near the bottom front from rust that had eaten through.
I was turned off and walked out after that, price was too high for my taste, i never checked the underbody.

Damn it,
How am I supposed to buy a 240SX when theres is only one manual car in my price range for sale. I cant believe this

Rust or no rust, 270K is a lotta milage on a car of any kind. If you buy high milage you better make sure that all the other running gear is in good shape. If the suspension is all original then you are going to be spending a lot of money. Also check if any of the belts or timing chain have been recently done.

Still, chances are that motor will be leaking and burning oil like crazy. With 270K on the clock you need to ask yourself how much the car has left.

See, the thing is that I am willing to spend up to 5000, but I just can’t find a 240 in the GTA for that much, every single one in autotrader is automatic

I am in the same boat.
I am also willing to spend up to 5000 i have had the money ready and waiting for the past 3 months since i began seriously searching for a 240, all are either auto, rusted, high km’s, or over priced from shady lying used car dealers… and of course are already modded in some way… i prefer to start from scratch.

One 240 i went to go see at “The Auto Place” looked decent, the guy said that it was mint and didn’t need anythign to safety or pass e-test, i knew better. As i began looking at every bit of the car and made faces as i noticed things he sort of broke and said how the windshield needed to be replaced, the floor had holes, and a few other things needed to be done to pass safety. I was like WTF you just said… lol

The search continues…

Ultimately it boils down to the previous owner(s). Did they maintain the car or not…high mileage is not always a very bad thing. It will reduce the car’s value naturally, but maintenance is key.

240sxfan, I went through the exact same thing as you. Good call, you are wise…even though it’s kinda obvious in some cases lol. Keep looking, you’ll know it when you see it, but check everything and remember that buying the car causes you to inherit any problems that it has (which every 240 will have).

It’s all about balance…price VS. what you are getting. Which is why I stayed far from Auto Place. The guy was so nice with me, but the 240’s there were horribly deceiving, especially with price factored in. Shady indeed.

I noticed that this black S14 was on Trader a while back (maybe a few weeks ago). Then it disappeared and now has reappeared with a different picture (of the same car). Has anyone checked this one out (I browsed through the four pages of this thread and didn’t find anything… so unless I missed it)?

no one even bother going to look at the gold s13 on trader with the american racing rims.

The guy tried to feed the biggest amount of bulshit… The goofiest of the goof…

there were patches of metal screwed to the frame, canadian tire accessorized. been in a crash or 2 and the old guy thinks he is a hustler.

NEW TOPIC:

What do you guys think of the SR20DET sale from autotrader?
  • Rico

What do you guys think of that 240 at Auto Place. I went and saw it but the guy is extremely firm with the price, he wants 5900 cash for it with everything included. Has anyone else seen it ??

It will be impossible for you to find a S13 that meets your standards.
As long as the car was winter driven in Canada there’s bound to be rust. You have to ask yourself how much rust is enough for you and that’s it.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the KA’s mileage since it’s a very sturdy engine. My engine has 248, 000 kms and still idles at 700 rpm and revs like champ(a SR20 is taking it’s place soon though).
Other things that usually go that I didn’t care about were…

  • a/c not working (didn’t want and gonna take the system out anyway)
  • power antenna dead (MP3/WMA Cd’s cure that)
  • rear window fluid squirter and wiper dead (RAIN X it)
So if you keep waiting for the perfect one, you’ll probably wait forever. Your other choice may be to pay a premium and buy a clean one from B.C.

WARNING: SCAM AHEAD

Alright, so here’s the story. The ad is right here.

This is a white 1991 240SX (AT) in London. The guy’s name is Sam and is selling for $2450. I went down there the other day to check it out and found that the car looked pretty decent… I drove it a little and it seemed fine, but the power steering was kinda weird (apparently there’s a fluid leak somewhere). In any case, that isn’t the problem.

After some research, I found that the guy was LYING THROUGH HIS TEETH. Honestly, everything he told me was a complete lie. This is what he told me (all of which are lies):

  • he’s had the car for a year
  • kms are accurate (180k kms)
  • it will only cost $200-500 to certify
  • the car is registered under his brother-in-law
  • he bought it off some guy a year ago who had to “get rid of the car 'cos he was having kids so he needed money”
  • the reason he’s selling is because “he has his own place and rented it out to some lady who isn’t paying up”

His ad also says (more lies):

  • CD player, power mirrors, tinted windows, certified

Well, I made the mistake of putting down a $400 deposit on the car and we made up a contract stating that he will get it certified (it wasn’t certified when I went to see it on Saturday, and probably still isn’t) and I would pay him the remaining balance once he has it certified. So as collateral, he gave me his e-test certificate and a non-recent Used Vehicle Report (I should’ve been more careful, but it was my fault that I didn’t check that it wasn’t even an updated one).

Upon looking at the Used Vehicle Report, something didn’t add up right. Apparently, on February 15, 2005, the car was registered to an owner “M” with 231k kms on the odometer. Then, on April 9, 2005, the car was registered under owner “G” with 183k kms on the odometer.

When I first saw that, it didn’t seem to add up right. Not just because of the roll-back but also because the current seller Sam told me he’s had the car for a year. I asked Sam why his name wasn’t on the used vehicle report (since it has been through at least TWO different owners since last year) and he said “oh I registered it under my brother in law for insurance reasons”. Of course, things started to seem really sketchy for me by then…

So I called up owner “G” (the guy who registered with 183k kms, a 48k drop from 231k) and he tells me that the car’s odometer was rolled back and there were actually a few legal issues with the car because when “G” went to register it, the police called him up and had to get a statement and everything. “G” told me that he bought that car for $2000 or so (around same price that’s listed on Trader) and later found out it would cost him close to $5000 to get it safetied. So needless to say, “G” was lied to and cheated out of his money. Since “G” didn’t wanna deal with it, a dealer, whom we’ll call “J”, from an authorized Nissan/Infiniti dealership on Wharncliffe Rd (I think the location is correct) bought the 240sx from “G” to sell the parts.

“G” gave me "J"s phone number so I called “J” up and found out some pretty interesting things. “J” gave me the same information “G” gave me… about how the car was in some problems legally and had a rolled-back ODO and would cost a good $5000 to safety (notice how the number is consistant with what “G” told me). “J” told me that he “sold it to a bunch of kids” for $600 not too long ago, and “J” had warned the “kids” about all the car’s problems.

Now, I imagine Sam was probably one of those “kids” who bought the car from “J” for $600… and now Sam is trying to sell it off for a good $2450. Basically, to make a short story short, the car is not worth $2450. It’s not even worth $1000. Sam was trying to make me take the car as-is for around $2000 and originally I thought that was fair. But after researching the car’s history, I found out that it would cost almost double the car’s value to get it safetied.

Before anyone tells me how stupid I was, let me assure you that I know that already and I’ve already felt bad about being such a dumbass. I gave the guy $400 and I said I’d buy it under the condition he gets it safetied (apparently the $400 was to help him safety it and would count towards the final balance). So right now, I’m in the process of trying to get my $400 back (although I highly doubt I can unless someone tells me how I can possibly do that).

So to sum things up… here’s the real information on the car:

  • the car was bought by Sam not too long ago for $600
  • there was a roll-back on the odometer but I know for sure that it’s over 231k kms
  • the car does not have power mirrors
  • it would cost apparently $5000 to safety (I found that kind of hard to believe, but I got the same number from two different people… one who works at a Nissan/Infiniti dealership so I highly doubt he’s lying)
  • it does not have a CD player
  • it does not have tinted windows

All in all, do not trust this guy. If you’re at all considering, don’t offer him anything more than $600 as-is. Please let your friends know about this if they’re looking to buy it because I was a dumbass and got ripped off and I don’t want it to happen to anyone else. The guy’s a scammer trying to make a huge profit. I mean, all is well if you wanna make profit off a sale, that’s natural. But everything he’s told me was a lie and the car is worth nowhere near the listed price.

So yeah, please let people (who are considering) know about this. I don’t want anyone to get ripped off by the guy’s bullsh-t.

Can somebody go check out the 1992 black 240sx Fastback?
It’s ran 185k and asking for $3500. thx
