Using an old oil tank as a BBQ smoker [smoker build thread]

I thought for sure it was done w/MS paint :stuck_out_tongue:

Move the fire box.

You see them fancy steel supports under the fire box and between the smoker? You see those plain old cinder blocks underneat my smoker? Yeah…

55g drum will be smaller than your 5’ width.

You can still rest the drum on the ground, AND use your fancy mounts.

edit: I’m sure some speeder could fab up some mounts from scrap…
you might have to smoke their meat though.

We are getting ahead of ourselves. We still need to get this out of Fry’s dungeon, err, basement.

Yeah but the smoker would have to be 24"+ in the air if the drum is underneath it. My design has it only 16" up, aka one block height. Plus it’s easier to get at the fire if it’s not under the meat.

Honestly I think the hardest part will be a burn-in that doesn’t fill the neighborhood with oil fumes. But it’s had 2 years for 97% of it to drip to the bottom so I’ll do a good clean rinse before I move it.

Times like these make me wish I lived in the sticks.

more parts for your next rev.

And yea… short people would be happy to use your smoker.

I have a full rack of ribs that I’ve been meaning to EAT. Wanna take part?

how does the wife feel about this in the backyard?

So much inspiration in this thread

Oh yeah. And therein lies the most difficult challenge of the project.

Shh… don’t tell her!

FRy you pussy get the drill out and drill a hole in the bottom of that bitch, Drip into sump pump, done. Now thats sthe manly option

lol no need to drill. The supply line to the furnace was a half inch line coming out of the lowest point of the tank. It’s dripping clean right now. Already chased the oil with half a bucket of simple green and hot water. I’ll let it drip for a day, chase it with another bucket tomorrow, then wrastle that bitch out on Friday.

It’s always best to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

YES! lol

besides, once she has tasted some of the food that is going to come out of there, she will change her tune. UGH we could smoke a turkey!

damnit, she found out. way to be ‘friends’ with your wife on FB, Fry…

We could smoke an ostrich. Think about it. There’s going to be a bit over 15 square feet of cooking surface. :eyebrow:

If all goes well I’ll build it and clean it tomorrow and test-smoke a rack of ribs on saturday.

We could precede a certain decade-centric party with an all day smoke out.

Slow and low baby. Slow and low.

All that is man to all that is NOT man in 3…2…
