Volvo V70 XC strange startup issue

Just wanted to throw this out here to anyone who may have experienced something similar to this issue.

Vehicle - 2002 Volvo V70 XC (Cross Country)
Engine - 2.4l turbo I5
Transmission/Drivetrain - Automatic/AWD

Current code set in ECM with no CEL ECM 711A - ECM intermittent fault High/low Voltage ECM 711A

When starting the car in the morning, and occasionally when idling, the idle will fluctuate sharply as if the car is recovering from a stall. It will do this about 5 times and then straighten out.

This is a recent development (within the last 4-5 months) and has not always been the case since we purchased the car last year. It does not seem to be weather dependent, but I’m sure the cold weather isn’t helping.

I have checked several things on the car to see if there was some sort of boost/intake leak causing the issue, but was unable to find anything. The only induction component I was not able to check was the intercooler. I have also looked through the grounding points on the car and even added more as a precaution/troubleshooting measure. I don’t have eny excessive resistance between the motor and the chassis.

I suspect a couple things like the CCV system and potentially the ECM itself. I’ve heard of the wandering throttlebody before, but this doesn’t seem to fit the normal symptoms as it occurs consistently when cold and occasionally when hot.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys!

Calling Captain Morgan…

Yeah, we talked about this one and I think we came to the same conclusion about the CCV system and the ETM. I just wanted to see if anyone had any first hand experience with something like this. I suppose I’ll be picking up a new intake mani gasket set for the CCV and the ETM replacement/repair job.

Unfortunately, with the ECM code, I’m still baffled. Maybe I should get the rebuilt too. Looks like I’ll have to get that 528 running so I can send this crap out for a rework.

one thing i would check that i forgot to mention is the pins on the ecu, they get worn out after a while and cause arcing and what not, take a magnifying glass and see if there are black spots on the pins and do a pin draw test on the female ends.

I had that checked first thing when I got the tune because that code popped up. I spoke with the service guys at Cap Volvo and had them remove and check the pins on the ECM. That being said, I don’t know if they went and checked that far into it. He said they looked OK. But everything always looks good when you quickly glance at it! Any chance I could get the ecm removal tool, or have you take a peek at it? I think I’m going to wind up having you do the timing job on the car because I’m just too strapped for time lately… that is if you are willing and able to do it :hug

Haha yea I can def do it lmk when and I can look at the pins and ill bring the laptop with the Volvo Diag tool

Oh and there’s only one guy I’d let touch my car at cap Volvo and that’s big Dan

Awesome, I’ll throw you a few bones when we get down to business on this turd. Probably looking at after the holidays because time is tight as usual. I have a brake job I’m doing on an E46 this weekend, but I’ll probably be doing it at my Father In laws place because of the snow/cold. I’ll hit you up though!

Is he the older guy that’s been there for a while? He looked it over and spotted shit I didn’t think anyone would notice!

Laughing my balls off right now about the people on the XCforums right now. I asked a simple question about whether anyone has used an aftermarket aluminum power steering reservoir and get back the standard what’s wrong with the factory replacement. I didn’t ask that, I asked if anyone had any experience with using an aftermaket unit. Oh well. I would like to lose the plastic one. Something I wanted to do with my 323 too, but never did for some reason.

Hmm I’ve honestly never seen anyone on any Volvo forums using anything for ps

Exactly, I think I’m in search of a sideways mounted style tank. Would be interesting to see that in there. Not to mention it won’t fail.

Oh yeah, BTW - I decided the other day I was going to change the oil on this pig because it’s been a few thousand miles… Well, as it turns out the oil filter looked like a crushed soda can. Full of debris and other shit. I changed the oil with the new filter and I think it solved my poor top end oiling issue on startup. So i’ll be due for another oil change in about a week or two. Luckily my father in law let me use the semi syn he had there so i could save the BG. Got any more filters laying around?

i might i gotta check

Excellent, I’m not sure how much stuff has been circulating since the filter clogged up…

yea you cant use aftermarket filters they really are junk mann or i forget the other one but they are the only 2 that volvo uses

Amen to that. I always use Mann (this one collapsed, but it wan’t the filters fault), OEM, or that other company whose name escapes me too.
