VW Engine replacement

I have a 2000 Passat v6 with a blown engine. I want to swap it out myself with a good one, but i’ve never done this before. I noticed that the Bentley manual should help out a ton, so i was wondering if anyone has one that i could borrow, or have an online copy that i can have.

Thanks.

you can pay by the day for the online version($25 for 3 days I think?), or like $75 for the hard copy. I don’t have any right now, esp for a passat… but that should get you started.

Xander may have a manual specific to the Passat v6.

I have the Audi A6 manual covering the v6, 2.7T, and 4.2. A majority of the information should crossover for the v6.

Find out if the Audi one will work for you and you can borrow it as long as it comes back with no extra grease stains.

doesnt the A6 mount the engine longitudinally? the passat is a VR6 mounted transversly, correct?

to the OP, just buy the bentley, you can always sell it when you sell the car. i bought one new for my old b3 passat for like $45 then sold it when i sold the car for $40 used.

no, passat bassically =a6 drivetrain/susp wise (minus the IRS and quattro on most)

OLDER passats(b3?) were transverse w/the vr6/o2a combination…

There was no mention of a vr6 in this thread though, and they were never available in a longitudinal configuration like the newer passats are.

Check out VWVortex.com under the technical forums, there has to be an online tutorial there. I got one for doing a timing belt and it was done VERY well by the poster, tons of pictures. You have to take the front of the car off which takes about 15 minutes, from there it is pretty simple, not any specific “tricks” The only thing thats lame about Vortex is the search function is TERRIBLE

I have a 2000 Passat v6

I realize that older passats were not based on an audi platform, im just trying to give relavant info though.

DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Steed-boy was talking about VR’s, which have no relevance to you. I quoted incorrectly.

gotcha, this whole thread is getting super hard to understand

here is my manual… it’s FREE!

Yeah and take lots of pictures, they come in handy when you cant remember how the wiring or hoses get routed.

thats why my statement had a ?? on the end of it, i wasnt sure. all my vdub experience is with the older (cooler) ones. my passat was a b3 with an o2a.

as long as you are just removing and replacing the engine with one of the SAME year, you shouldnt need a manual. i know vw likes to change things year to year or even midyear though, so a manual might not be a bad idea.

LOL

Once the bumper is off it should be pretty easy, I’ve had mine pretty close to ready to pull on a few occasions, I can’t imagine the wiring harness and the tranny are that hard to take off.

X…

not gonna lie, it’s a shit job on the floor… srsly… if you’re worried yank the engine and trans together and mate them on the ground. just pull the transmission mounts off the tranny and it’ll slide out. pull the pcm box lid and yank all the connectors and the wiring harness goes with the engine to be swapped onto the new engine before it gets stabbed. good luck
