Also, how much are chips, are they easy to find, how hard are they too install, and what is the HP Gain. answering any of those would be nice. also, since the turbo is stock, would you even be able to install a BOV?
its not a “chip” is just a reflash…

you eat chips, (dont forget dip)

it ups boost/fuel curve/ timing. etc…

no bov on vw’s, there not “bov’s” there called diverter valves…

if you put an ebay bov on you will f-up your turblow…

come see me at the haus, there are $129 valves here that wont f-up your shizzle

I’m soooooooo not talking to you anymore! How dare you bash the engine created by the hand of god him/herself.
and cmon, honestly, these vw’s cant require more than what, 1 fix per year?
I bought my Jetta in January 2005 with 57k on it. It now has 101k. In that time I have fixed:

1.Broken idler pulley/shredded belt
2.Regreased whining idler pulley when all the grease leaked out again
3.Clutch
4.2 seized rear calipers, including gouged pads & discs
5.Fan Control Module died
6.Clutch gave up the ghost
7.Wiper base link seized
8.Alternator
9.Glove box door
10.Center console storage bin latch
11.Nasy rattle in driver’s side A pillar
12.Nasty rattle in passenger side A pillar
13.E-brake lines
14.E-brake lines (these cars do not like non-VW replacement parts)
15.Clicking from FR corner (turned out to be 2 rust chunks in the hub)
16.Rotary Crossover Valve bushings
17.Brake light switch (Which is under recall, but only covered once. This car is on at least its 3rd switch.)
18.I’ve got a tranny oil leak I haven’t bothered fixing

So unless I’m forgetting something, that’s about 30 months and 18 things that have needed fixing, which is 7.2 fixes per year.

oh dear.

Oh, and both front wheel bearings are just starting to have a bit of play.

As soon as my CC’s are paid off and the Jetta’s paid down to the point of being trade-in-able, the wifey’s going to let me look at new Tacomas. It’ll be nice to go from something that breaks when you look at it sideways to something you can leave in the ocean overnight and then drive to work. :stuck_out_tongue:

the 1.8t was ranked as one of the top 10 best motors, for 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, and at the time few engines (like the f20c from the s2000) made more power per liter than the 1.8t.

but should you get one: NO

you can make a quick 1.8, and yes you can swap out the turbo, common swaps are k03s, k04, gt28, gt28r, gt25, uhh you can make an easy 320whp on the 1.8 and the stock block and internals are rated to 400hp, but youll never make traction so yah, uh forget it, its impractical…

you can build a 1.8 that beats on evo’s and sti’s, but if youre poor sorry i made you read all that…

my car required to swap out the ecu, so whole new one because of the non drive by wire, you can tune it with a VAG-COM as well…

There’s a difference between tuning and hack-jobbing something to run.

he has spoken, he has shown us the way ahhhh.

um i had the beetle for just under a year. put 23k on it. i needed a new radiator a month after i bought it. new ebrake cables. replaced the brakes. the wiring was alll jacked up in the door because the german’s like to torment us. hmmm what else. oil pan/oil pump simply because i’m dumb. timing belt and water pump because they tend to break after 60k. new window regulator. all of that jazz for $2,000-ish. oh and a wheel bearing was going and the a/c no longer existed when i sold it.

i’m not even sure how much money i put into the car. but it was fun to drive and i’d never buy anything other than a vw/audi.

like they all said. don’t buy the car unless you have the $$$
