clean, modern, contemporary…i’d put a piece of glass on top and use it in my living room
whats it going to be used in?
the velocity stacks look so sweet. that thing looks like it will be awesome.
Max torque (est.): 380 Nm ( 280 lbs-ft)@ 7200 rpm (bmep: 15,7 bar ; 228 psi) ?
i like it. wow i wish i had tools like that.
Impressive.
It’s an engineering study, not done by VAG. So it’s not scheduled to be used in anything.
Swap it into a Geo Metro… that’d be hot.
I think it looks awesome I wonder how it sounds
Nice little piece of resume fuel. :jawdrop:
looks like the head and cylinder are one piece, then the jugs/head bolt onto a crank case.
any idea how much it weighs?
<3 9-3-1 header
“Weight: 118 kg ( 262 lbs) complete with exhaust system”
Let just say I give large props to this guy for the work he did but I must say that this engine was the worst waste of time/concept I have seen. It is a 3 liter engine running on alcohol that weighs 260 lbs and makes 500hp. Ok so what is so special about that? Current gen IRL engines are making almost 700 on alcohol and weigh the same, have the same capacity when not rev limited. Fuck, Cosworth DFV from the 1960’s were making 500hp out of 3 liters for 280lbs complete. So 40 years later this guy cant do better much less his EXPECTED power of 500hp. 1000hp on a turbo. Again it been done but way better(CART 2.65l turbo engine if they were allowed to turn the boost past 7psi) Typical of people these days thinking shit is crazy cool modern more powa when it was done and done better 30 to 40 years ago. So on a power and weight subject thats that.
Vibration. I love the fact that he has a masters degree thesis that is 32 pages long that only says he balanced the crankshaft weights. No mention of a 1st or second inertia balancing combined effects. Laughable. Simply laughable. I am not saying it cant be balanced but that would be any serious engineers point to prove that the config would actually not shake itself to pieces. That is almost the single governing reason for engine config of a given size over another config.
Packaging. Speaking of performance car or even full out race car with aero implications. Very nice packaging and small size but again what a waste of time. If the engine were to be used in a front engine config the exhaust would rout through the firewall. Okay so lets move the engine forward about 6 to 12 inches to make room. Well that throws out the advantage of having such a short engine since if you did a front engine/mid engine car you would have to choak up on the firewall. On a rear engine application it is just as useless. The exhaust would poke up into the aero stream of the rear of the car and wing which makes it useless. this is why late 60’s cars got away from doing center mount exhaust once wings hit the scene. Also the engine is tall which again fucks aero. This is why renault went to such a wide bank v10 to get the cg down and lower the rear deck for better aero. This config leads to the most cumbersome of airboxes since you need a plenum to make real power as F1,CAR and IRL have found do to induction acoustics. This engine was made for cool factor and not practical packaging into a car or race car which like vibration is a driving factor.
End analysis. The thing looks really cool and probably sounds really cool and it is light but it was a waste of time because there isnt a car you could put it in that would be better off with another engine for what this thing would end up costing. This guy was dreaming or what he wanted to do and not what was usefull for anything. Depending on how you look at life he either did awesome job of realize a fantasy or he is a complete tool engineering student who has zero grasp on vehicle integration and its effect on subsystem design.
i bet you’re a real buzz kill at parties
EDIT: i am of course just kidding.
I’m not.
Fun-ruiner.
When you do something that cool, I’ll be that guy.
rob_woods,
the whole motor was designed and built in 13 months.
i feel like thats a pretty good accomplishment given the time frame.
im sure with more resources and large engineering team, that motor could be optimized and do much better. im not saying its a modern marvel of motors, just that the guy did a pretty good job given his timeframe
he did a great job engineering an engine that really cant be used in its intended platform that another engine hasnt already done or currently doing better. I think it is really cool I just think he really missed the mark on it. You can oohh and aaahhhh at it but thats about all its good for.
The same shit goes on in FSAE. People design for what they want not what is needed to win. Two of the 3 major comps last year were won by cars using a yamaha 450 wr single cylinder dirt bike engine but people still insist that you must have a 4 cylinder bike motor. When asked why the stuttering just starts. Same shit with this guy.
I agree 150%. FSAE was a egomaniac clusterfuck. I had fun but jesus christ, I dont know how some of these people even manage to get a degree.
Looks like that’s all it’s good for to me.
