Watch Crew: What to buy?

Was it a decent price and decent exchange rate or just a buy because it was in stock.

I still find it mind bottling that rolex sells ~1M watches per year at that crazy (to me) price point.

A great price! It was European MSRP, 16,900 euros. And I would have gotten 15 or so % back in VAT refund. So total I would have paid was around $16,000usd, or about the same as US MSRP without tax. Grey market has them at $23,000 for comparison.

Business models that refuse your money should be an automatic failure. I shy away from Rolex purely based on their "youre not good enough for us to take your money’ attitude. I’d have had some choice words.

Normally I’d agree, but with the shortage of Rolex watches since the pandemic I can see why they want to keep it local. Only annoying thing is they didn’t have someone right off the bat on a list that was going to take it. But again, it’s a thing to keep relationships local and maybe get more business with other watches they sell instead of hooking up some American who won’t buy shit from their store again.

It was heartbreaking though to think I had my grail watch and then not have it. I told my wife it realistically felt like watching the Bills getting to the playoffs each year and then losing to KC.

Did you give them your number in case they change their mind?

Did you try talking using an accent and proper hand gestures?

Maybe I could see that but I still call BS. Maybe its been there 5 years and no one bought it. Maybe the “locals” can’t afford it. If it was even verbally promised to someone, take it out of the case. I see it as you didnt fit the mold if a Rolex customer and he made up an excuse. Heard the Rolex AD experience too many times.

I was only there for a day. We’re doing a Mediterranean cruise. We’re ending in Rome and staying there for a few days and there are 8 ADs in the city so I’ll be chucking all of them out.

I think if anything, I fit the mold of an American which they don’t want to sell to. The manager couldn’t even come over to greet me. The rep was awesome.

You should start a YouTube channel filming the process of restoration. This is the kind of content people endlessly consume.

Facts. Go look up random restoration channels, not just watches but anything, they get an insane amount of views. Even like pressure washing videos. Many of the videos are like 1.5x speed with some slowing down on certain spots or just words on the screen explaining what’s happening.

I love a restoration YouTube channel. I watch watch reconditioning to make the case like new again, car detailing, old tool restorations, dry ice blasting, and fixing wrecked super cars. I can’t get enough of watching something old and beat up get returned to like new condition.

Marshall Sutcliffe got me interested. His channel has some viable education, but its more on the entertainment side. There’s some others that do a good job as well, but there’s a ton of time in editing, not to mention the proper video equipment. Most of those guys do this for a living. For me right now, its too much time for me to allocate to doing it on a youtube (or other) platform.

Are you selling them? You seem to have a lot of seikos

I was trying to develop an inventory before I started putting any up for sale, and I think I’m there. Let me know if you have any you’re interested in.
