Watch Crew: What to buy?

they are 100% identical, down to the screw colour, with an engraved back plate…

that’s like me taking a SR20 manifold and tack welding a Bings logo onto an unbranded china manifold… which happens… well i don’t do it but every company i listed above does.

every single watch Tourby has, including and especially, the silly skeletons, share tell tale design features with china knocks… i would put money on Tourby just ordering you a chinese knock off and branding it with their logo and that is what takes the time… not the hand making as they say. There are guys that do this in the automotive aftermarket but i can say anything about that

yeah, they claim to be custom watch makers, they might just be custom assemblers of chinese junk

That 's odd :), exact same thing happened to my chinese skeleton watch that i bought 3 years ago that Tourby has a version of that is identical… hands fell off or were misaligned from factory… wow, i’m so surprised tourby has the same issues as the chinese… oh… and my watch came from Germany too… another coincidence.

Prometheus is another WUS sponsor… it’s a guy openly importing chinese knock movements set in homage cases and selling for a couple hundred bucks.

anyways… drift works is a UK based company rebranding obvious chinese parts as their own… that’s what Tourby is.

i really love THIS;

Hamilton is a SWATCH group company that uses SWATCH group (ETA SA, Valjoux) movements that are made in Switzerland… not the USA… Hamilton being an American brand is just a marketing position. The font on the tourby movements is also not the Hamilton font… and no one puts U.S.A. on a movement… AFAIK there are no US movement makers. Even Kobold uses ETA SA or Valjox movements.

is that HAMILTON written in comic sans? LOL I’m wearing my hamilton now, and the font is WAY off

I have been looking for a leather band plain face watch to replace the Hamilton that someone else is where right now. I’m digging the IWC but not looking to spend $10 grand. Maybe just keep watching for a bigger faced Hamilton.

get an ORIS or an 5-10 year old Omega.

I have my Oris, kind of wanted to diversify the collection.
I like the Omega idea, but where do you look for used watches? I don’t have enough trust or knowledge to buy from individuals online.

Wish I had $500 for a watch :-\

sadly, $500 isn’t really even a drop in the pan for a quality watch.

I recommend changing the way you feel about it.

Or, pay me a 15% premium and i’ll buy the stuff online for you

Ebay and Watchuseek are all you need.

No lie, That thing better suck my dick for $500+. All I want is a $100 watch that is from made by some chinese kid for 10 cents. As long as it tells time what more do I need?

Then this thread isn’t for you.

Idk, I love the modern looks and have to admit they all look amazing but I could not justify spending that much money on a watch. Even if I had an income to support that kind of spending, I feel like it’d be nothing but something I’d keep locked in an office.

Serious question: if you spend 10k on a watch, how pissed are you when it breaks or you hit it on something?

Money is relative to the beholder typically. A person that has the funds to splurge 10k on a watch is probably no more upset then if you or I dinged our $500 watch.

How pissed are you when you spend $10k building a car and it breaks?

Watches are a lot cheaper to maintain, get more use (wrist time vs. drive time), and hold thier value better if you pick the right piece.

That is true

OK…

I’ve got a buddy that wears a brietling daily (at least $5k). He loves the watch, but he was telling me a funny joke about it. He said that since his wife is a massage therapist(owns company), they do a ton of laundry at the house and he helps out. He said just about everytime he reaches into the dryer to pull out the linens, he wacks the brietling against the dryer. He says that everytime it happens, he dies a little inside lol.

As already stated, it’s more about the mechanics and precision of the build than it is anything. It’s actually kind of funny the way it works out. I’ll break it down.

There are 3 major types of watches.

  1. Automatic - It actually winds up while it moves, never needing a battery or to be wound up. I have no idea how it works, but it’s somewhat complex.
  2. Wind up - You may have seen your grandmother spinning that little dial on her watch when you were a kid. That’s sorta similar to a wind up toy, or one of those little toy cars that you pull back, then it zooms forward.
  3. Battery - Obviously, these watches are powered by batteries.

Automatic is usually NOT the most accurate watch. Due to it’s nature, the fact that it’s not moving to wind up for most of the day, it loses time pretty easily. Usually you have to reset the time every few weeks or so.

Wind up can be accurate as long as you keep winding it

Battery is the most accurate. It keeps the best time because it has a constant power source.

As far as price goes, Automatic is the most expensive and battery is the cheapest. So it’s a bit strange that the autos don’t keep AS good of time. It’s all about the mechanics. You pay more for a watch that has GREAT parts and is reliable. You pay EVEN more if that watch company has been around a long time and their reputation is stellar.

Don’t forget Eco-Drive

eco-drives are only made by 1 company…
