Wear your gear! Sumo vs deer

That sucks

crashed starts at around 7:00

Deer popping out is constantly in my mind riding twisties; Sucks for the guy. He did however slowed down a bit for the deer sign at around 6:58. If he was going any faster it could be worst…

FYI, he didn’t wear any gear because he DID NOT plan on crashing that day, otherwise I am sure he would wear them :rofl. Which makes me wonder if anyone that had crashed before EVER thought of crashing the day that they crashed?

Shoe flew off as expected. It is amazing how a $99 pair of riding boots could have easily saved him from his ankle injuries. Not to mention bare skin on cheese grater like pavement is never fun…

From his video description:

Me getting taken out by a deer. Was riding a Yamaha WR250X around 1pm on Fox Island,Wa when it happened. Ended up in the hospital for 4 days. 6 permanent screws and a plate holding my ankle together,2 fractures to my should as well as torn muscle. To top that off had massive swelling/bruising on my hip from landing.

^ All that from crashing at just around 40mph…

Note to self. Padded innner pants for this season.

Leather. Leather with armor/pad/whatever. Always. Everywhere. Saved my ass from a deer once. I think of that night every time I think it’s too hot out to be wearing leather.

^this

Almost hit a deer a few years ago at night leaving LVD on the bike on I90…nearly shit myself I mean I could have reached out and slapped that bastard on his ass! Mike on here will testify to that, he was riding with me and saw the whole thing…and we were going around 70 mph. (65 mph zone)

Guys at my job (all Harley) refuse to ride if the temps are below 50 at coldest, and wear only nominal gear - vests, silly cruiser gloves and brain buckets. Some wear chaps and unarmored jackets. Middle of the summer I don’t think they wear anything more than jeans and t-shirts. Same bullshit, “I don’t plan on going down”. No kidding, you think I do? I just prepare for it.
As far as I am concerned, if it’s too hot to wear gear (about 115 for me), then it’s too hot to ride, period.

is there a ventilated/lightweight gear company/line? if not, there’s a solid niche to make money in. there are undershirts made for dirt circle/oval drivers, which have built in cooling systems, hooked up to a can of some type of refrigerant. i think this concept could be applied to motorcycle gear pretty easily.

It’s never too hot for gear… it’s just too hot to stop when wearing it. :lol

Pretty much every major manufacturer has perforated leather with vents, removable liners, mesh with armor, etc. So yes, it’s already being done.

True, but unless you live in the middle of nowhere with no traffic and no traffic lights you’ll have to stop eventually. Sitting in rush hour even in part-leather jacket gets pretty toasty. I feel sorry for people who ride aircooled bikes.

I live in the middle of no where so i’m all set lol. I agree sitting in traffic suuuuucks.

That was kinda funny, lol. Not the crash but the yelling and phone part.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t laugh when he started screaming.
“HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP HELLP!”

My old man cut a deer in half a year before I was born on Rt29 in Lasselssville. He said he saw it pop its head out and thought “I can slow down and eat shit or throttle it and go through it.” I saw pics when I was a kid of the pieces of meat/guts/blood on his suit/helmet and burried inside a mangled kz1000 lol. Thankfully he was wearing a 1 piece snowmobile suit and full face since it was early November. Since he first told me…I’ve had no interest in ever owning a bike.

awesome story is awesome.

Damn that sucks. Middle of the day too, bad luck.

My friend got taken out by a deer on his bike a few years ago and got pretty rashed up and gave up riding (hoodies don’t protect shit lol).

Smart man. I’ve been told that its better to just hit the animal straight on, rather than get all fancy trying to avoid it and crash in the process.

think its funny how the guy noted the hip bruising.

i crashed at probably about the same speed… broke some ribs, cracked the shell of my helmet and got a massive concusion. i also had bruses up and down my thigh and side/lower back. the brusing was by far the worst and is still slowly getting back feeling. happend 7/10

Sweat dries slot faster than broken bodies heal. I don’t even ride and understand this.

I am pissed I have to get all new gear this season to match the unicorn ducati I have to put together for myself, becasue my old gear wont match! :frowning: lol

Never the less, its a new leather jacket, and padded leather pants.

Look like normal pants for the most part off the bike, yet will keep the skin on your bones.

Alpinstarts 50/50 boots. More for motocross/dirt, but I loved them on the street too. I could walk all day in them too and forget I am wearing them. Jeans cover up 80% of the boot and all the buckles too, so if your not rocking riding pants, nobody will know you have moon boots on under there. While I wish they were a BIT stiffer side to side for ankle protection, I crashed on the street with them and riding practice MX fooling around and 100% would have rolled my ankle without them. Best $150 I ever spent.

All in all, its around $600 or so. While it might hurt the wallet at first… it feels a hell of alot better when it comes into play than if you cheaped out!
