I’d definitely say the early Datsuns and the Beetle. The Datsun 240Z and 510 where huge hits in club racing on many levels (even till this day). And the Beetle was widely available to many people.

Though down the road the focus shifted to the first pocket rockets. The first VW GTi and Honda CRX really got peoples attention and things snowballed from there.
