what do you weigh? if you arent a big dude and if you dont have alot of upper body strength, get a 125.
ive seen alot of guys get kicked off of a 250 cause they couldnt handle the bike.

have you ridden a dirt bike before and know you’re going to like it? riding it once or twice doesn’t count either…my suggestion is to buy a used bike for around a grand, ride it next summer…THEN think about a new bike. Why lose depreciation value if you decide you don’t like riding? just my .02 though…

Also, I’m not sure how much riding experience you have but if you are more of a beginner you’re going to dump it a few times, especially if you’re trail riding. I can tell you when I first started riding I dumped my bike half a dozen times over the course of the summer before I got comfortable with it. It was an old bike so it didn’t matter.
Buy one that already has a few dings and cracked plastics then you won’t feel as bad when put it on its side.

now power, im sure your assuming say a 250 2 stoke and a 250 4 stroke are the same over all HP?
well seeing AMA will do nothing about this, but are well aware… a 2 stroke produces pretty damn close to .10 hp per CC so a 250 2 stroke would have 25 hp @ crank.
now a 4 stroke on the other hand, is pretty damn close to .12 hp per CC.
so a 250 4 stroke would be 30hp.

i know i was just using it as the example that its not exactly half the power.
not trying to call you out or anything, just giving out some info i picked up.

something is not adding up here, swap 2 and 4 stroke in your first post?

agreed about the KDX also
on the 4 stroke rebuild note, if you F up a crank, head, or even anything in the valvetrain your looking at some major $$. but i am looking at this from a race point of view. im sure this bike wont see WOT as much as im / we(?) may be thinking.

either way, me and you should do some riding a lot this summer eh?
I’m most likley going to get a membership at a-51

no, there is a bit more math involed, i was just trying to set an exaple quick.
125 2stroke compares to a 250 4 stroke.as sledmire said do the math then, but you have to slit the 4 strokes overall power in half due to not getting power every stroke etc…
sldemire… i live 15 mins from 51 on a farm, theres trails around here, and the main sled trail runs thru my back yard. im not at 51 at all anymore unless i watch, im 30 secs up the street at the supermoto track
IMO, a cheap toy with low end any big bore 125… if you are under 200#'s. I loved my RM167… and someone loved it more because the stole it.-bitches

its still a snappy bike for a bigginer, i would say KDX all the way.
and he does race, just showing up to the track and wandering around you learn alot about bikes, parts, issues, ect…
i did go to college for powersports, but im not here to argue. im just trying to show some info
seeming how its his first bike i dont think hel be rcing it anytime soon, and if he was the only way hed stand close to the others is by starting off with a raceable bike, meaning no drz’s or ttr’s or trail bikes. if your looking for a trail bike the best bet would be a ktm, or a suzuki drz. the ktms will be a little more exspensive, but sometimes its worth it.
if you plan on racing, the typical, yz, rm, kx, ktm,cr’s
most things have moved to almost all four strokes, seeminghow 3/4 of the tracks in ny wont allow any 2 strokes on the track due to pollution, in a couple years. but either way the foru strokes are in, and better, the power is there all the way threw the rpms.,
the suzukis were my moneys at. rmz250, or a crf. for sure. if ou race, where do you plan on going.?
