So in the past I’ve used two arc joint pliers to compress rear calipers that hand pistons that needed to “wind” back in. I would apply pressure with my 16" plier (the way I would compress a normal piston) and use the other to turn the piston clockwise. This, however, is a pain and is not very friendly to the boot.
I have also used the OEM brand tool you can rent from pep boys or autozone, and my only complaint was that the T handle didn’t offer as much torque/leverage as I needed. I used a small metal tube to increase the power but the T handle bent fairly easy doing this. It still works and you can bend them back, but I am really looking for a tool that might be more durable.
I like how comprehensive this one is
it has 18 attachments, but I’m just wondering what some of your thoughts are for maybe suggesting something more durable.
this tool is worth the small investment for calipers that need to “wind” back in. Other than that, for regular calipers I use a C clamp if i can get it in there, or carefully with a set of big channel lock type pliers
I’ve never not been able to get a regular caliper in with 16" arc joint pliers, way faster than using a C-clamp. I just leave the old pad in and open the pliers way up and squeeze on the back of the caliper and the pad.
I’ll have to check out harbor freight.
edit: The one from harbor freight is a rebadged version of the one I posted haha, same price and everything. I’ll use one of those 20% off coupons for harbor freight though.
Thats the exact same thing as what Autozone loans and I’ve never had an issue with it. The first turn might be a bit hard, but once it breaks free it goes in like nothing. I do have some large cloven hooves for hands though. I do like the kits though that in place of that T handle, have a 3/8" opening you put a rachet on and turn it that way.
to the guys the use C clamps. It is a huge time and hassle saver if you compress the caliper before you unbolt anything. Most calipers have a slot in the middle big enough to fit a screwdriver in and you pry between the rotor and pads and you are done in just a few seconds and don’t have to fumble with a c clamp.
Amazon always has a good price for lisle turn back kit. I had the cube I would never use it professionally. You will have a great time using that cube on a newer ford. Most car manufacturers have gone away from internal parking brake sets.
