What do you need to build a PC?

So, what will work with what? Like will any motherboard work with a processor? Or should I just buy a “combo” thing?

all of the manufacturers put a lot of their own shit into startup and that’s why they run slow. Either install a fresh copy of XP or delete the manufacturer specific shit and it should run like any other pc.

Ehh kinda agree, kinda dont
One thing to keep in mind is that if you leave on the copy of XP that Dell provides it is bloated with all kinds of shit that other companies pay Dell to have their software installed.

Well you cant take it off if you are like us. WVU has a contract with dell amnd they cant change the OS. It isnt XP BTW. We only use windows 2000. It is a fact that dell uses cheaper parts. I know what brands are good and I spend some time researching parts before buying. I like to know that what I am using has been thoroughly tested and works well.

You should go with a combo, or read up alot more on how to build a PC.

which is why your home pc is faster than your work pc. Dell,hp,sony all use components that work very well together

Read, enjoy, build. 2 minute google search

no, they use components that they can buy cheap and in mass quantities. Sony probably uses the better hardware of all those, but you pay for it. www.alienware.com makes pc’s with nice components but is overpriced. Gotta pay to play… unless you build your own. My home PC is also faster because it is overclocked and all the hardware was at the top of the reviews. Epox motherboard, EVGA video, Crucial ram…

For reviews incase you have a question about quality:

you people don’t need blistering fast computers FYI. you don’t do anything ‘intensive’ enough… trust me.

any basic p4 will work fine. no need to blow a ton of $ on top of the line products… just get the basics at a discount if you can.

I never had a performance problem with any dell, compaq, hp, sony I have ever dealt with. Take all the BS out of memory and they run the same as any other home built pc with the same shit.

but I agree, your p4 that you bought is 10x better than the p4 that comes with the dell’s.

my home pc is a compaq evo with a new video card and it runs every game out there and is just as fast as the pc’s I have built for people with the same speed processor (p4 2.4ghz). I don’t know why people think that home built pc’s are automatically better than a manufacturer.

Well, I think I’m almost done specing out what we are going to suggest to the big boss… I’ll show you guys so I can get some input.

I’ve always had a lot of luck with Tiger Direct/Global … they’re the same damn place… eveyrone else on here seems to say that they dont like them, but i’ve never had problems…
biggest thing is, to get parts cheap there, you need to send in rebates… and if you’re doing computers in quantity, rebates dont help much.

I agree… i dont think you need a 3.2 Ghz P4 for the computer to run fast… 2.4 P4s run great, especially if you have enough ram in them…

Well, I speced out some stuff and the guy here thinks we can get away with stuff from AMD, I speced out Intel brand stuff, SOOOOO I’m back to the drawing board.

just save yourself a bunch of time and buy from a manufacturer. With all the time and hassle, it would be better for the company to just buy the prebuilt stuff.

i run a p3 866 @ home.
