What motors are compatible with a ford 427?

I recently picked up a boat with an old 427 in it. I was wondering if there are other motors that can be swapped in. Would a 460 bolt up to the belhousing? I heard a 460 is just a stroked 427.

427 is by itself. 460 will not bolt up the same!

so I have to pretty much find a way to rebuild the 427 or find a new one

Do all FE motors bolt up the same?

I told you before you went and bought this… 427 bell housings are by themselves. AND, im pretty sure that block is cracked you have… so you’ll have to find anotha

Are you sure it’s a 427? That seems like an odd size for in a boat. You would think that it would have a more popular engine. I’ve never personally seen a 427. I can try to look it up in an interchange manual.
What year is it?

If it’s a 428, A 360, 390 is a direct swap.

If it is a 429, then a 460 will be a direct fit. 351M and 400 use the same bell housing pattern, but different motor mounts.

yea I am pretty sure it is cracked too. I am just looking for other options. The motor itself is pretty expensive. I just find it strange that no other ford motors would bolt up.

Can’t blocks be welded?

I have a 390FE

ford is not like gm. each family of motors has it’s own motor mounts and bellhousing pattern, basically nothing swaps over from a differnet family, unlike GM where everything is common.

a 427 is a badass motor and if it can be fixed, do it. It will be worth it. Or just let me have it. :D:D:D:D

Is it a side oiler 427 or a normal 427? If it’s side oiler, you have a $15k motor on you hands.

measure bore and stroke, that’s the only way to tell what size motor you have. I see a bunch of people selling 390’s and 428’s that are old 360 truck motors with 120hp or so. There is no way to tell from looking at the motor, all fe’s look the same except for the side oiler 427.

If it could have been fixed, i think i’d have owned the boat by now!! It looked pretty cracked to me… and last I knew, you aint welding that up :frowning:

some nautical motors crank backwords…so you still might need a boat only motor

now listen… ford has three series gasoline engines they are small block, 385 series and FE series the fe series are 352,360,390,427, the 385 series are the 351M, 400M, 429, 460, the small blocks are 260,289, 303, 351w, 351c,

so you can actually see the crack? I looked and didn’t really see anything. I just noticed the massive amount of coolant in the oil. I am gonna go check it out. I wouldnt personally weld it. I would pay to have it done.

you forgot the FE 428
also the 385 series has a 370CI motor

a 351m, 400(no M) and 351 cleveland are 335 series engines

ain’t ford motors fun.
