What would you do? Clutch with Tranny replacement?

not replacing the clutch would be “penny wise, pound foolish”

I agree do it all at once Theres no point in doing the tranny then putting the old clutch back in. It might be slipping then you have to fetch out more loot and redrop the tranny just for the clutch.

20% isn’t a lot, considering the stock dual mass weights a ton. i would do anything in your power to remove the dual mass flywheel and go to a solid flywheel with a dampened clutch disc. in my opinion it’s the best mod for the VW’s with dual mass f/w’s, and i’m glad i got it out of my car when i had it. as long as the clutch isn’t ceramic, it should drive close to stock and pedal effort would likely be similar.

I’ve decided to go the way you guys recommended and will go with the stock clutch replacement.

Even though my mod bug screams “UPGRADE!!!” I’ve decided that with zero other mods, even a stock clutch will hold up if I do some simple bolt ons later on.

I also agree that the dealer may be saying “Sure, go aftermarket.” just to void the warranty on the installation. Agreed, that would not be fun.

I will tell the dealership to get me a stock clutch assembly, as long as the flywheel is O.K. Everyone says that the dual mass needs to be replaced usually at 100k interval (Every 2nd clutch) so it SHOULD be fine.

If they come back and tell me “You need a $1,012 flywheel as well.” I will tell them to hold on and THEN go aftermarket with the $700 option for both clutch/flywheel. I’m pretty sure they will say that the flywheel is fine, however.

Thanks for the input everyone, I really appreciate it! I knew very little about clutch and flywheels two days ago. It sucked having to decide this stuff so quickly, but you all helped.

Welll looks like you decided, but I would have gone upgraded flywheel, Ive pulled many a Dual mass out of VW’s and put in 1 peace aluminum flywheels and the car was night and day so much more responsive, it took a week of driving to get use to clutch take up, but I liked the way the car responeded, one of the clutches (aluminum flywheel, sachs clutch) has over 150k on it.

My current in the TDI is at 110k on the new clutch, (removed dualmass, sachs clutch), I had the ACT clutch in my evo/stock flywheel, it was fine and held the power, I put 20k and sold it dont talk to the new owner not sure how it held up.

I ended up getting the stock clutch kit for $360 shipped from Mazda rather than $525 + tax!

So… I guess the question should have been “Spend twice as much for the upgrade, $720, or $360 for a replacement stock one?”

Guess I can’t do modding for another 12 months/12,000 miles… as that’s the new warranty for the drive train as well.

don’t put an aluminum one in there next time. glad you saved a few bucks on the one that’s in there. are they going to resurface the original one? it’s $43 at napa and it takes less than an hour.

If the flywheel and pressure plate looked decent I’d be tempted to leave them. New disc and throwout and go.
