Going slightly bigger than you need is not a problem, now going smaller than you need is a problem.
Theres nothing wrong with cooling mods, but on an otherwise stock-turbo’d car, what is the purpose?

I highly doubt i’ll max out my own intercoolers, though I hope I do someday.
I maxed out my Stage II injectors before my factory heat exchanger even huffed a sigh of stress :lol
Also running distilled water + water wetter in the summer months works wonders…
heat soak my man. stock 1.8t ICs get very heat soaked very quickly.
now in terms of as big as he went, whatever. he doesnt need it but maybe he is gearing up for a 35r someday. never know.

when pushing a turbo so out of its efficiency window as the k03 is when its chipped, they begin to push hot air and just that. so an effective intercooler is necessary. these cars rely heavily on the IAT’s and going from a stock smic to a fmic people have regained 10-15whp and upto 40lb/ft tq that was otherwise lost from heatsoak/ timing pull.
requires a fair amount if you have a stock lip still, with a 20thAE lip, or a GLI lip in the case of the jettas, much less trimming is required. hes got some Oettinger bumper so it may fit quite well.
Sounds almost as bad as the Supercharged model of the SS Cobalts when pulley size is dropped… :eek3
