When do you know it is time to change power steering fluid?

hey,
I checked my power steering resivor and it was full, but it seems that the fluid is dirty and there are metal particles in it, is this Normal? also when do you know when it is time to change power steering fluid, also how do you do it??

Change it when the fluid is dirty… :stuck_out_tongue:

hah, metal particles are not supposed to be in any fluid, i’d say give it a change and hopefully the particles aren’t a sign of a bigger problem.

Its not really connected to this but i got a question since were on power steering… Am i just noticing this now and all s13 are like this or is it a new problem on my car. The power steering helps turn the wheel easy but when i move the wheel really fast back and foreward it seems like its now working properly like its not gettin enough pressure quickly enough. Its not noticable in regular driving but when I take a sharp turn at speed and gotta turn the other way for another corner going the oposite way the wheel gets stiff like the steering assist no longer works for that moment then with no string wheel movement it gets back to normal like the system has pressure again. any ideas? its really annoying as it messes up my intended steering pattern.

yea i know what you are talking about. haha

i’d say you have a leak and you don’t have enough fluid in it. after i did my engine swap i only had enough PS fluid on me to fill it up half way and it was acting like this, then when i topped it off it worked properly again. check the fluid level by unscrewing the cap, it has a dip stick attached to the cap.

lol that was the first thing i checked when this happened.

Noone else knows why this happens?

Are you running a super hicas?

my problem was taht i had a lose power steering hose. after i tightened it and added back the fluid, bled it and it works perfectly fine. so look for any leaks or loose bolts. change them and you should be fine.

where would a loose bolt be if the power steering is leaking?

I noticed this after i put a thicker Power steering fluid in… Or when the weather is cold… The fluid is thicker, so it struggles to push it thru the system till it is warmed up? i dont have this problem when i run thinner PS fluid.

theres two 24mm bolts on the power steering system near the pump. its easily spotted.

No Im not Running Super Hicas. Maybe its because of the cold… ill try flushing and changing fluids.
