When to switch to RG11?

I finally got around to wiring my house for cable… I’m part way there. I had a 75’ stretch of R59 I just replaced to R6Q. (100’, 75’ isn’t long enough)
The R59 had one of those “push on” ends, and was causing a really finicky internet connection, I finally got sick of it and got rid of it. No idea how long the wiring has been in here, but probably a long, long time.

There’s RG6 from the pole -> house, ~150’ then another 100’ run of RG6Q inside my house. Would there be any benefit in crying to TWC to upgrade the line outside?

The reason I ask, is as far as I can tell people say 100’ of RG6 can be run without any signal loss… I’m quite a bit over that, so it has me wondering. Also, removing that R59 and replacing to RG6 gave me a bit of extra speed from TWC… from 19Mbps to 28Mbps. I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence or how it happened, but I’ve always got around 19-20Mbps and now every test has been 27-29Mbps. Unless TWC upgraded my service in the last few days without me knowing.

Everything has signal loss. RG6 loses 5.6 per 100 vs rg11 at 4.7 per 100 @ 700mhz. RG6 is to be run when the drop is under 150ft and rg11 up to 250ft. Post your modem levels located at http://192.168.100.1

It may not be beneficial to have 11 run.

Levels are usually within spec… They don’t vary much from this.

SB5101 modem

SnR: 35.2
Down: -3.5
Up: 48.7

When I had the R59, my SnR was usually around 31-32 and Down was about -10-11.

edit; I was also under the assumption that RG11 was 3.7 per 100. The difference between 5.6-4.7 doesn’t seem like much.

Opps, its 3.7 vs 5.6.

SNR at 33 or below shows signs of an issue.

Your signals now are fine and would have no benefit to an rg11 drop.

Thanks
I have yet to add a splitter for the TV, will that cause issues?
I’ll put the splitter on in a few days… Still have to call TWC.

you seem to be pretty savy so you probably already know this. use the smallest splitter available to you. For example don’t use a 8 way if you only need 2 outputs.

edit: are you going to call TWC for a splitter? I have piles of them on my truck if you need one or just flag down someone.

2 way loses about 4db on the forward and 3db on the return. So adding a 2way would bring you around -7.5/35/52. You should be fine, general rule is the cable modem should be on the first splitter with anything digital and a second splitter for all analog TVs. The signal today is not what it maybe tomorrow.

thanks guys.

I planned on having 2 splitters… A first 2way that would connect a TV, then the other side would continue the cable line down to the next spot, where there would be another 2 way that would connect to another TV and the modem.

Perhaps I should get a 3way at the first TV, then run 2 Coax lines the rest of the way to prevent splitting it again?

I have splitters from around the house. I took down the lines TWC ran way long ago… They ran 352325ft of it outside around the house and in to every room (3 lines in to my living room). It was mostly all R59.
Going to reside the house at the end of this year/early next year… So I figured it had to be done sometime anyway. It looked so terrible with wires everywhere.

if you are going to pull new cable run all your lines to the same spot. If you need quality coax I can give you a box of dual cable so you will have 2 lines in each room. You will have to live with your cable being stamped DirecTV every 2 foot though. But if you ever decide to change to a sat provider then you will know for sure all your cable if rated for anything that will roll out in the future.

Thanks, I have all the cable I need for now though. I just hope it’s a decent quality coax. It’s GE RG-6Q, from Home depot. Sometimes I forget that all wire isn’t created equal. I also have some RG-6U that I’d end up using, GE as well.

solid copper 60% braid rated for 3gig those are your 3 key points (for DirecTV approved cable). copper clad steel has much higher loss voltage than solid copper

No sharp bends, kinks, or staples to secure the line unless you are using the proper staples with the plastic inserts like TWC uses.
