Windows: Insulation or Great Stuff

So I have used both and I like using insulation and filling the gaps around the window. I have used greatstuff and 1) its messy and 2) if you put in just a little too much it expands out to much.

I will be installing new construction windows tomorrow and a friend of mine, who is an engineer, says Great stuff is the way to go. It will stop and infultration(sp).

What do you guys like/use?

Thanks

No good can follow that statement. :stuck_out_tongue:

I dunno. They make a special low-expansion great-stuff for window applications. Use that if you go the expanding foam route.

I’d probably just use fiberglass insulation. Great-Stuff’s expensive.

Greatstuff; just trim the excess if you use too much.

But use the Greatstuff for windows/doors.

Yikes!

Don’t use great stuff.

They make special foam for insulating windows and doors, because great-stuff expands and contracts under thermal irregularities.

You may never be able to open your window and you may notice bowing if you use great stuff.(If you’re applying to vinyl replacement window)

If you want foam specifically for the job go to Accell windows and doors or something and buy a DIY kit. My father uses this thing all the time and it saves time but you really gotta be careful with the application.

Old school insulation is cheaper, less messy, and safer. It’s just itchy and a pain in the ass to do a lot of windows with.

Fuck the engineers, my father is a glazier. The only time we ever use greatstuff is to fill the ladder rungs on the truck so they don’t howl when you drive over 55 and to fill in gaps on bow windows and things that don’t have moving parts.

you dont want to use “expanding foam” or aka great stuff. it will expand and push on the casing and cause the window to open/ close poorly. also, on new installation windows with the “j” channel built in you should need to caulk it, on the instructions on my windows said “do not apply, because… blah, blah”

That stuff will do the trick.

I thought he was talking about regular grade Great-stuff, that is no good for windows due to the expanding properties it has.
