Winter tire design

Picking up another set of winter tires and wanted to pick your minds. The price on these are pretty much the same, along with the reviews. Which design do you think would do better in our snow/slush/ice. Currently I own a winter tire with a directional pattern and really like them. Never had a winter tire like the cooper design

Opinions?

I’ve used the Generals on a couple of cars. I have nothing bad to say about them, other than the typical studless snow dry weather “squirminess”

I did last winter on the generals, and have no complaints, I’ll likely be getting another set for this year(different car).

my girlfriend has had the Coopers for 3 years. actually just bought another set for this year. seems to hold up fairly well longevity wise. and i think the wider paths between tread lines help because they dont “blind” as easily as a tighter tread pattern.

How are the reviews the same? One was rated 8.9, the other was rated 7.4.

Yea I saw that, not sure if I always trust DTD reviews.

I was looking at the reviews on

Holy crap, fucking funny you are asking about these two tires. I just took off the generals off my A4 because I didn’t like them, they seem to push a lot to me when the wheel is turned, and I just bought the coopers. I have had the coppers in the past and I am counting on the square/block tread design to change the feel I had with the altimax’s and didn’t like. Had the coopers on my Evo many years ago and was happy with them, so I am going back.
I am being kinda picky I guess, most people probably would love either tire, but after having many sets of snows over the years I am kinda a PITA about it. If its a really bad winter again, I will take out my studded Nokians I have in the basement.

I have the same experience as Jeller. The Altimax Arctics were great-I could accelerate, I could stop, I could turn. However I could not turn and hit the brakes or the gas without plowing for a bit. BUT, this was on a nose heavy pig Quattro so who knows.

Ive used the generals a couple times and they are great.

I personally have stuck to Blizzak WS70 only. Just got some WS80’s for the A7 this Winter which I’ve yet to throw on. They handle squirmy compared to inherently grippier tires but not as bad as other snows I’ve used. More importantly, they get through the deep stuff. I used to plow out of piles of snow with my STi & a set of WS70’s. I’m of the belief that anything that isn’t a 200 treadwear or lower Summer tire or slick will handle like ass, so I may as well go with the thing that is most functional for what it’s designed for. That’s my two cents.
