Went out for the first outing with the drag sled today up at Littles Lake just past Cherry Valley, NY. Overall a good day, mainly just dialing the suspension in and what not since it’s a new chassis. Record for the day was 4 wins & 2 losses, and I guess if you want to count the race where some jerkoff crossed into our lane which led to coasting 3/4 of the track. The two losses were by 1/4-1/2 a sled length to a Ski-Doo 1200cc turbo…got him hard off the line but he reeled in on the back half. Wins were against 2 Polaris 1000cc’s and a Ski-Doo Mach 1000 and a AC F7.
Set-up: 2001 Yamaha SRX “700”, the motor is a 780cc.
Other sleds we had are a '06 MXZ500SS, 600cc motor & a '02 SXR700 Triple
Warm-up box vs. the turbo Ski-Doo 1200:
Out launching the 1200:evilking:
Ice was pretty slushy where everyone was parked, some dude’s truck broke through and had to get towed out, other than that it was a blast. Got some more tuning & dialing in to do but the season is still young.
We(me, my dad, his buddy Dan) all raced/rode it throughout the day but in the pic Dan was racing the turbo 1200.
It’s a handful. The clutches don’t kick in until 6900-7krpms, revs to 10,200rpms. Digs right into the ice, no spinning(the beast ice picks do their job :)), and the key is to not lift the skis…which happened vs the 1200 :facepalm. My dad estimates it making a little over 200hp, sled weighs ~420lbs & we’re at around 110mph at the end of the track(~1/8th mile).
Littles Lake is all sleds, I’ve never seen quads there. The riding conditions aren’t really suitable for quads, kind of small and they have two drag strips plowed…one for the big dogs/fast guys and one for like any sleds to run or test things out.
To be honest, stock, I don’t find them THAT impressive. That '02 SXR700 Triple is stock with a can and my buddy Jonny w/ that 500SS, which is basically a MXZ600, with just a can is on my ass from ~30-105
Yeah Ive been wanting to pick up a sled for awhile, but dont know a whole lot about em as Ive never really been into em. Not sure whats a good one reliability and performance wise and whats junk.
Yamaha’s are great sleds, very reliable and hammer pretty good with some basic mods and obviously fuckin boogie with a nicely built 780cc in there!:evilking The only thing I hate is the SXR700 on the trails is fucking ass. Very stiff, suspension isn’t very bump/jump friendly.
