Well, I’m currently in Toledo, OH. Tomorrow morning at 0700 I need to be at the US Coast Guard Regional Exam Center to test for my 500 gross ton Master’s (captain’s) license upgrade. I’ve been working on this for a year and a half and I’m still terrified. I’ve been told that nobody passes it the first time…perfect. It should take me two days to complete if all goes well. I don’t really know what else I could possibly be studying at this point, but I feel like I should be doing something. Ugh, I hate exams. Anyway, I’ll update when it’s all over, good or bad…
Good luck man
There’s always a first time for everything
Good luck.
Good luck man!!
good luck…
Cool! Good luck man…
500 tons… how big of a boat is that?
Best of luck!!
There are 500 ton boats in the 3-400’ range.

Good luck!
Good Luck!!! Sounds like an awesome goal you’ve put a lot of time and effort into; hope it all goes well and you beat the odds and get it the 1st time!
So is this writen and a “driving” test?
LOL yeah do you have to parallel park an oil tanker?
Lol, no there’s no “driving” test. It’s all written. As of right now, I’m 4 for 5 sections on the entire exam. I failed one section by 4 questions…aargh. I still have 2 chances left to pass it. I’m studying for it now and I’m going to give it another go at 0745 tomorrow. Hopefully it goes better. This thing is a complete total motherfucker…
Good luck, my father has his 100 ton.
Good luck, sounds like an awesome career…
Wow good luck man
Well, I made it. I was up studying until 0030 then got up at 0530 and read more shit… The section I had to take was 25 questions, I finished it in under 10 minutes and scored a 100 on it. I’m definitely having several beers when I finally make it back home.
Congrats. This mean you’ll be piloting something a bit bigger than the Grand Lady soon?
congrats
