Won't Go into Neutral

I’m looking at a 1971 cb750 that has problems going into neutral (the bike won’t start). do you think its something cake, like a contact with the kickstand, or am I just asking for trouble (new gearbox). anyone had these kind of problems?

having worked on a bunch of old Suzuki’s, I doubt the Honda has a kick stand safety switch. At best it could be the switch that makes sure the clutch is pulled in when started.

I’m a little unsure though what the real problem is. Will it not start at all, or is it that once it is started it won’t go into neutral? If it won’t start it could be something dumb like a battery or clutch contact or something more significant like a starter or an electrical gremlin somewhere. Post back up and let us know exactly what it is / isn’t doing. You can usually start a bike while the gearbox is in gear as long as the clutch works. Not a great idea though. Any of the lights work when you turn the key to on?

i don’t know when they started putting kickstand safety switches on the hondas but mine has one. When you say it wont go into neutral do you mean it won’t shift at all or it just keeps skippin from 1/2 2/1

shift forks mayb?

No check for warped clutch plates first before you start going to the shift forks.

Take the metal plates and lay them on a flat surface like a glass table and start pressing the edges. After you do it on one side flip it over and start pressing the other side. If it rises off the table its time to replace them. It only takes about 3 warped plates to make it rediculously hard to shift if you have more it could bind it up completely.

On my ZX12 there were 12 metals and 12 fibers. The outside ones were ok, but as I got more toward the center they were warped. Changed out the All the fibers, and metal plates and all the springs for under 150. Ran like new.
