how bout you just do it since you probalby have absolutely nothing better to do anyway. I dont even charge FRIENDS let alone family when I do any type of car work or wiring etc for them. thats just gay. I might charge for parts or out of pocket expenses but not for doing it. what goes around comes around. im sure they do alot of crap for you theyd rather not do. can’t think of anything off the top of my head but im sure its out there.

Probably true… but when you have a large family and a LOT of friends your phone WILL ring off the hook. Especially if you do the work free. For a while I didn’t go a day with out 2-3 cars asking for either Computer or Car help. It would have turned into a 2nd full-time job fixing friends’ shit for free. A real friend will offer to compensate you for your time anyway. Now when ppl offer up front I usually turn it down. When they expect it free I charge.

just cause they call doesnt mean you ahve to do anything. if you busy just tell em yoru busy and youll get to it when you have FREE time b/c thats what your doign it for… FREE haha.
i dunno man… i fix quite a number of computers… and field a lot of questions… even poeple i dont know… and even people from this site.
the worst i am is that i’ll make the person bring me their computer or ask tell them that it’ll require some work and elude to them paying me if i feel it’s needed.
basically there isn’t a good market for fixing personal peoples computesr… i can setup new hardware and spend 6-8 hours conifiguring a machine and charge 100 bucks…
or i can go work for a company… spend 4 hours over two days on a weekend, deploy an image on 20 machines and setup 2 servers and charge 1000 bucks to a company…
big difference there…
do the easy stuff for free and be a good person about it… i doubt 100 bucks is gong to make or break you.
(although i have charged 100 b ucks to fix computer.s… but then agian, when these pepole call me back, i go out of my way to make sure things work… like third party software and new hardware drivers… even after a year or two years… )
basically i’ll do it for free, but don’t bug me
or give me 100 bucks and feel free to email me your problems… simple as that
Maybe it’s different out here. I have a buddy that makes a pretty good living doing nothing but house-calls for STUPID little computer issues. He started out sellin’ 'em at Circuit City and he’d offer to go setup the system for like $50 for the buyer and TONS of 'em took it. 10min to plug it in and boot it up and he was OUT. Now he operates fully on Word of Mouth and basically caters to the computer illiterate rich-folk around Santa Cruz Cnty. He has ppl pay him to come out and update their virus software, install spyware software, run both and then clean up the registry to “speed up” their system… ON A REGULAR BASIS. You’d think after they watched him once they could do it… but no. LoL
I’m not saying try and make $ of your friends/family. But it was really to the point where every day after work I’d have to go to somebody’s house to fuck with their system. After dealing w/ computers all day at my “real” work I don’t always want to go home and do it more.

i hear ya man… i have employees that offer to pay me 150 bucks to come out and ‘install’ a new computer… i get to there house and it’s a brand new dell still in a box… can’t argue with jobs like that…
i know, personally, that i don’t want to play around with peoples bullshit issues… regardless of the money involved…
there is a ‘market’ for that bullshit everywhere… mainly because people are assinine. i just choose not to deal with them.
point being… working on bullshit computer issues suck… but when it’s family or friends, why not help out?
Agreed untill it turns into 40hrs a week of volunteer work. They are your family and friends, they should understand that you need some time away from the BS of computers too.

I don’t understand why thats so hard for some people. If they keep nagging you tell them “hey there are other people that do this for a living so you can either wait for me to get the time to look at it or you can go pay them”. End of discussion.

i’ll stress FAMILY as any of my friends woudl know i’d tell them to FUCK OFF if i’m busy and they’re bugging me about bullshit… family and friends should konw not to take advantage of you.
but in reality… i think we can all agree.
shalerpunks time is worth nothing… so spending hours fixing tedious computer problems is worth it.
i would charge them for parts not labor - and take a LONG time returning the stuff
