I am picking up an 05 sti this week that the previous owner sold the 6 speed and installed a 5 speed because he thought it was getting repo’d. With my dsm’s I had a shep and ffwd tranny service- is there any companies that do the same for the wrx in the 2000 range? I am not looking for a stock rebuild- I would like something that can hold 350-400 ft/lbs reliably. If I can’t find anything in that range I will just find another 6 speed. Thanks for any help.
just for reference sti 6-speeds go for $2500-$3000 and can hold a lot more power than a wrx 5-speed. You better be getting an absolute steal on this car…
Also, I’m pretty sure in order for him the put the 5-speed in he would have to install the whole wrx drivetrain as well??? This would make the sti virtually worthless… correct me if I’m wrong
and if he thought it was getting repo’d then he’s obviously not paying his payment so how would he have the lien release for you??? just something to think about
^^^^^
correct on all points… this better be dirt cheap, b/c the 5speed is going to be the weak link, there’s no fixing case stretch and hard part failure.
Or its not even a real sti ? Sounds like something to steer clear of…
Just FYI, I have an impreza with a WRX transmission freshly rebuilt with PPG gears 1-4 helical cut. If I can’t sell the car I’m going to part it out…
+1
you would have to replace the rear diff too and other things I think.
and I think the 05 should have the bigger lug pattern. if it is 5x100 it is not an sti at least not an 05 sti.
Correct it will need diffs as well as axles hubs bearings driveshafts. This is no easy swap I would car fax this.
Thanks for the advice so far but it is 100% a sti and it has a clear title. The whole drive train and suspension was swapped and it is an absolute steal on the car. Even if I spend 4/5k on the drivetrain I still will be under 10k total so I am happy with it.
And yes it was swapped to 5x100. The carfax was clean. The previous owner had it payed off and declared bankruptcy. Since he had 3 vehicles he thought it was getting taken by the court so he sold everything of value he could as long as the buyer replaced the sti part with an oem wrx piece.
Where are you seeing them that cheap? I am assuming that is just the tranny, not the rear/hubs/diff/axles/etc
why not just buy a wrx and swap in an sti transmission.
much cheaper insurance.
The diffs and tranny are the MAIN thing that make the sti>>>>>wrx
just the tranny itself
A Wrx tranny with PPG gears is more badass then an sti tranny aint it?
im gonna say no on this one
id be cautious… seems like a lot of what ifs.
For the price I’m purchasing the car for, I am expecting to have to spend a sizeable amount to make it completely reliable. Fortunately I saved enough to justify spending the difference in parts to turn the car into what I want it to be.
I would walk away although you are getting a Sti who knows what hack put what together. These cars are a pain in the dick to work on motor wise.
A pain to work on overall, especially a tranny swap oh lord…
While I do appreciate the words of warning that I have received so far, I have weighed the risk/reward factor of this purchase for almost a month before pulling the trigger. For the price I am getting it for, I can part it out and still break even/small profit. While in college, I worked at a subaru dealership so I understand the basics of subaru work and I feel like they are easier to work on then the dsms I have dealt with for the last 8 years. All I was hoping to get out of this thread was some transmission shops that deal with subarus other than the ppg gearset which costs more than the sti stuff usually.
