WRX Wagon guys and Regular WRX guys Help

My explorer just isnt cutting it for me…I love SUVs tho and don’t mind the gas mileage but I would like to do a little better if I could.

I need something sort of cargo capable for some things I have to haul around for work.

I am curious how you wagon guys feel about driving a station wagon…I dont really think that my SUV is a station wagon…even tho it basically is.

What years are better than others?

Reliability? Gas Mileage?

Describe the wagon factor of driving enjoyment…I know the wagons are slightly wider if i remember reading correct…

I think they are sharp with some decent rims on them and the fun to drive when I am not working aspect is starting to dawn on me almost more than having 2 cars.

Post up!

Thanks

well, are u going to sell it after 2 months?

I have a sedan…but I’m not sure what help I can be based on your post. I can get like 28mph on the highway if I cruise at like 70-75. The car is chipped with full exhaust (no cats) amongst other things though. Around town, enjoying the car but not beating on it with a mix of highway I can average 18-20 mpg per tank.

I am thinking maybe a year or 2 on it :stuck_out_tongue:

The regular WRX guys can tell me what to look for…what kinda miles certain maint. items become critical…years that are better than others for recalls…etc.

i like this option kyle

Yeah…it dawned on me looking at JaysGreenLXs sig

But it does fit my practicality needs…I can sell the Z…and throw exhaust…ecu…drop and rims at the wagon and enjoy the heck out of it year round.

Don’t get an early 02 and you’ll be fine. Some of them are ok, but most have random problems.

Reliability? Gas Mileage?
Very reliable if you don’t wail on the transmission. Gas mileage depends greatly on driving style and mods.

The track in the rear is narrower and the fenders don’t bulge out on the wagon like they do on the sedan so if anything it’s narrower externally. The interior in the rear might be somehow wider but I don’t know. I didn’t have a wagon.

Wagons are more narrow. It’s the front track that is more narrow, but only by 20 millimeters.

Like the above posters said, the first 2 or maybe 3 shipments of '02’s had some random problems. There was a fuel line recall for all years through '05 IIRC.

The tranny is your main concern. Watch for a 4th gear grind, as well as all other gears. They’re not as bad as everyone makes them out to be, but be aware, if you slam gears and pop the clutch very often, they will break. They can take occasional abuse though. Other than that, as long as the car has been maintained, they seem to be pretty reliable.

Looking at your last post though, if something is on it’s way out you usually get fair warning. Crazy electrical problems and stuff like that isn’t common on the car, so it’s not likely you’ll be stranded in the middle of no where.

Truth.

Yeah as stated wagons are a bit narrower than the sedan (no fender flares) so you have to be careful of the wheel width if you put new bling on it.

Wagons have fold down rear seats, sedans don’t. That was a big factor for me. I have had two saw horses, a table saw, a router, a power miter box, a circular saw, a box of misc. parts and the stand for the table saw in the back of my car with no issues and not in my line of rear sight. It also fit my 40" LCD w/ box no problem. The Circuit City guys doubted the power of the wagon, but I knew better.

Other than that there isn’t a whole lot else that I can add that hasn’t been said. You are savvy about what to look for in cars and the only major issue I know of on WRX’s are the trannys for the older models. That was only a problem if some asshat was launching it like crazy or got a little too sloppy while trying to drive fast. If you are good at driving stick, then its a non issue. The 06’s+ are a little better now and utilize double cone synchros.

I knew a guy with an '02 sedan. He bought it just after it launched in the US. He did quite a few mods to it (exhaust, ECU etc.) and last I knew he was driving it every day wiyh well over 100,000 on the clock. He modded it right after buying too…in fact that was the car that made be fall in love with the WRX.

As for mileage…I am getting about 20-22mpg right now (winter mileage). In the summer I’ve gotten as much as 26 with mixed driving (mostly highway). I haven’t taken it on a trip yet, but I’m sure high 20’s are easy.

I only have 11k on my car right now after 16 months of ownership and it has been flawless thus far.

Damn I wish I could have found that back when I bought mine. White was so hard to come by.

The 06’s have quite a bit more than the older versions. STI side skirts, color matching mirrors, 4 pot/2 pot brakes (formerly on the STi in Japan), 2.5L engine, 17" wheels, nicer interior. More HP. The 2.0L would dyno at about 170whp while the 2.5L does about 200whp despite the reported 3hp increase from 227 to 230.

can you get wrx wagons in STI?

Negative, but the future 08 wrx and sti will only be available in a 5 door hatch according to Jeff. The regular impreza will still be available in sedan mode though.

Thats sexy

I only want to spend about 15k max on this as I am planning to buy a house in July/August. I also need a dealer to finance because my first 300zx cost me my credit rating.
