an HDTV is really worthless unless you have HD Cable or something that outputs in HD such as a blu-ray / HD-DVD / PS3/ Xbox 360. so dont waste your time and money on an hdtv if you dont have any of the above

if the tv has a HD tuner all he needs is an antenna… cheaper than all the options you listed and being in the pittsburg area should net him more hd channels than comcast offers unless your talking about premium channels.
my hdtv has HD tuner built in, i also have an antenna + direct TV when i have the HD antenna on i pull in appox 6-11 channels. some arent even that clear. thing is only good when something is broadcasted in HD like a football game.
