Then you’d be looking for a DSLR. I started off with a D40 and its good bang for buck to get your feet wet with shooting in manual mode.

If you can afford it get a D80 or D90 so you can use AF lenses. Can’t speak for Canon but they’re just as awesome.
What is your budget?

I have a D80… I persoanlly think they’re the best bang for the buck. You can get them for a good price now.
