WTB: SR20DET 264 cams

Looking for 264 cams, preferably HKS step 2.

Can trade for my BC 272s if you want (plus cash if necessary), but have cash available as well.

I currently have HKS 264 step 2’s in my car.
I’m not looking to sell but WHY are you going with a smaller cam?

I figure if you’re adding meth, you’ll only want to make more power.

I have heard a rumor that SR20’s run better and make more power with 264’s than with 272’s.

My setup is more suited to the 264 cams. My current setup has stock manifolds and a 2871R .64. I also don’t have any machining done in my head and have set my rev limiter to 7500rpm. Basically, when the cams are getting into efficiency, the rest of my setup is falling out of efficiency. I am getting a bunch of lag without much of a gain in power.

These cams would be better suited to a massive turbo, built head, and aftermarket manifolds.

This is the explanation I have come up with through my experience with the setup and research. Someone more knowledgeable can feel to correct me if I’m wrong.

I see. S13 SR I presume.
I disagree on the manifolds as both stock mani’s can flow a lot of CFM. Especially with that 60mm TB. I also disagree on the Built head it’s not needed with the large S13 ports.
The 272’s are designed for a slightly bigger turbo though.

How’s the mechanical/CAS timing on the car?
Is your car knocking and pulling timing?

Dyno graph’s I’ve seen show the 2871 pulling all the way to redline, not tapering off like you’ve mentioned.
My 2860 does drop off after 6500 or so.

How much boost are you running?
It almost sounds like the turbo is running below it’s efficiency range, especially for the cams.
With that 2871 - .64 , 7.5k limiter and 272’s it should be moving a large amount of air efficiently from 4500rpm onwards.

I would also check for boost and exhaust leaks to make sure it’s holding boost and exhaust pressure all the time.

The car does pull hard as hell after 4500. The car is not knocking or pulling timing. Boost is at 16.5psi. If I set it higher, it falls to that level. Im not sure why as I have checked for boost and exhaust leaks and havent found any. I will double check before I put the car back on the road. Car was tuned by Dan at U2N Dyno and made 335whp at 16.5psi. Im not sure about the mechanical timing as I did not set it but Im assuming it was set properly. I don`t have adjustable cam gears and I have been told that to fine tune the timing with cams this large, I need those.

Everything I’ve seen shows that the SR has an extremely restrictive head. I thought this was one of the weakest points in the SR?

Essentially what I am trying to do was maintain the same power level (or more) while gaining a bit of response. My original plan was to switch back to stock cams but I may loose some power. Since I am going to pay to get it retuned again, I might as well get 264 cams, install the meth, and make the timing mad aggressive. I want at least 350whp this time.

For higher boost, sounds like you need a better wastegate.
Also, If Dan tuned it, I’m confident that the maps are good.
I’m sure he has tuned tonnes of 2871 builds.

The head could be the “weak point”, which is why a lot of builds are going to VVT heads.
Our heads will never flow as good as like a K20 or a VVT head, but it’s what we have to work with.

If you install a stock intake cam, it will bring your power range back down.
Keep the 272 exhuast cam and try that setup for a while.
I have a stock intake cam you can borrow if you’d like.

I just figured since you already had the 272’s in, to use them.

Other option is to get cam gears and advance both cams a few degrees.
OR advance intake, and retard exhaust… Will make the car very peppy.
That, and a wastegate than can hold boost.

I know DSM’s used to LOVE 272’s and make good power.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my 264’s and I would not sell them, but If I already had the 272’s I’d at least try to make the setup reach your goals.
