Xenon HID Bulb Replacement

Hey all…was looking for some input/guidance in regards to getting a new set of xenon HID bulbs for my 05 Infiniti G35x.

So the other day apparently my front right bulb went out and I’ve been procrastinating getting it fixed for a couple days and brought it to wheel and tire warehouse to get an estimate. According to them one bulb = $140 dollars plus half an hour of labor plus tax somehow brings the total cost to like $200 bucks. In my opinion that’s ridiculous and I’m really hesitant to pay such a steep price to get one light replaced.

So I did a search online for a xenon HID bulb that would be compatable with mine (apparently I run a d2r setup whatever that means) and came to this page - http://www.plasmagarage.com/XENON-bulbs.html Here they offer a set of ultra white for a pair of two for $130 dollars. I wouldn’t mind paying that price for an upgrade to my OEM HID Lights however I don’t have the proper means to install it myself. So I’d be willing to throw someone a couple bucks and some beers to do the install so I can watch and see how it’s done properly.

Feel free to shoot me a message on here if you’d be interested in helping me out or give me a call at my cell (518)-728-2826 name is Steve. If I get a response with someone willing to do the install I’d like to get it done asap pending the availability of the bulbs

Thanks all.

-Steve

are you 100% sure its the bulb and not the ballast? I had the same thing happen to the evo last year… bought a new set of bulbs ($200) and then installed them (which includes taking the bumper off and entire headlight assembly) only to find out that it still didn’t work. Ended up being the ballast which was even more expensive then the bulbs… :headbang

How would I be able to determine that it was the ballast and not the Bulb itself? It looked as if the bulb just burned out and the guy at the wheel and tire warehouse said the same thing.

I pulled out a voltmeter to check if the bulb was getting power after the new set didn’t work. I actually have never seen a blown HID bulb so I don’t know what they would look like. If it looks blown then it probably is the bulb… hopefully.

Let’s hope that’s not the case. Would a bad ballast have any effect on the turn signal? Because those work fine.

only if the turn signal was HID and hooked up to the same ballast… which means no ;D

You guys are shitting me right? $200 for bulbs? LOL.

Just get some Phillips D2R or Osram D2R’s on EBay for $60 or so (best two OEM HID Bulb companies).

I’m using the D2S bulbs that came with my HID kit (I have Acura TL Bi-Xenon projectors), but it’s a similar situation.

It’s still expensive…but at least you’re not getting raped in the ass and then dirty sanchized. Holy crap.

A blown bulb looks “crushed”. My H3 Fog light bulb (6000k HID) was that way when I pulled it out two days ago. It basically melted itself lol.

As for testing the ballast. Most ballasts (OEM or aftermarket) when first turn on hum (zzzzzzzzzzzz) and then quiet down if they are good quality. Have someone turn your lights on and see if the both hum for a short period of time. If only the working one does, then it’s definitely a ballast. Also, did your lights flicker at all before it died? That’s also a sign of a ballast on it’s way out usually.

nothing from ebay is ever going on my car. I’d rather spend the extra cash and make sure it’s a legit part. To each their own

Just found a site that sells a stock one for 27 dollars. Anyone ever use this site before?

Still looking for someone to help me with the install who has done it before…Any takers? Will throw you some loot & beers for helping me out :giggedy

Not everything on EBay is shit. Been there done that. I buy about 50% of my stuff on EBay and I’ve had no problems. Hell, my suspension (LCA’s and Ball Joints, etc. are from EBay and I’ve had ZERO issues).

Extra cash on something legit? You’re going to end up spending double the cash, not just “extra” as in $40 or so.

If you WANT…you could buy this kit (comes with lifetime warranty). I’m running them (headlights and foglights) right now in 6000k.

HID Kit LinkHID Kit Link - Get the DDM one, not the Apexone

Bulb Replacement Guide - Tells you what kind of lights are in your car doors, trunk, etc.

Let me find out how it’s done (if I need to remove the bumper or not). If it doesn’t require that, I can help you out. I’ve installed 4 HID kits on my own car so far…kinda been there and done that.

I don’t drink, so money is just fine lol.

Looking at getting a DDM pair of D2R 4500K just OEM stock and 35 bucks for a pair? That’s a killer price…

WITH lifetime warranty.

I have the 55w (a bit brighter than stock 35w most cars have) in 6000k in my TL’s…and 35w 6000k in my fog lights. I can meet you somewhere in the evening sometime and show you the daylight :).

I’ve only had em on for about 4 days but I’m definitely happy…and with lifetime warranty…can’t go wrong for that price. However, keep in mind that sometimes 55w kits can melt stuff. I think your G would be safe from that, but it’s your call.

Doesn’t look like bumper removal is necessary (04+ Maxima’s require it for the most part and Nissan’s and Infiniti’s are similar in MANY ways).

If you want…we can meet up and I can tell you if I can do it or not.

From what I’ve read online if you can crank the wheel hard enough to one side you can remove the plastic wheel well and access it that way. If I went stock 4300k OEM bulbs do you think it would be necessary to replace both lights for a sense of consistancy? I would imagine that the OEM bulb stock from Infiniti should match the OEM 4300K set you provided in the link.

Your kit will come with both. I suggest changing together and keeping your working OEM’s as a spare.

As HID bulbs get older, the color changes on them.

But first and foremost, make sure it’s your ballasts that are the problem. Or just order the kit anyway and keep the ballasts it comes with for the future. Up to you. Just have someone turn your lights on and see if you can hear a zzzzzzzzzzzz sound from the bad headlight. If you can, the ballast is working and the bulb is the problem.

Ok will do - I’m going to pick up my car this afternoon from Wheel and Tire Warehouse so I will keep you updated this afternoon. Thanks again for everyones help regarding this so far.

Let me know how it goes.
