Ride a dirt bike first to learn how to clutch? Does clutching/shifting not come naturally? I think the hardest part of any manual transmission vehicle is just taking off in 1st gear. You can learn to shift just by playing video games or watching movies. Learning clutch control in 1st gear is the hardest part of “learning” to ride. (Same thing with a car) People take the MSF course on little 250’s and go out and ride their whole life on public roads with no problem. (Does that make them good riders? No. There’s a difference between knowing how to turn, and knowing how to turn GOOD/GREAT). If you have proper gear on, your biggest concern may be dropping a 250 on the street at a slow speed taking off. I personally don’t know anyone though who has ever dropped a bike learning how to use the clutch/shift.

I’ve never ridden on dirt, I learned on a GSXR 600 SRAD for ~6 hours, then bought a CBR900RR. I accidentally wheelied that thing more times than I can count. I never grasped the basics of throttle control before jumping on my literbike. This is where a smaller bike definitely comes in handy. Instead of focusing on your throttle in a turn on a larger bike, you can focus more-so on entry/apex/exit on a smaller bike because the throttle is far more forgiving. It took me ripping around on a 250 to realize how much better of a rider I could be before I progressed.

I’m not saying I’m good. I destroyed the chicken strips off my Z1000 the first day owning it, but I got some hefty strips on the R6. I’m not concerned with that though, I am confident in my riding ability, and while people tend to leave me on the straights (because I obey the law), I usually can keep up & pass most of the riders I see around here in the turns.

Cool story, this isn’t about how good of a rider you are. So you didn’t start out on a 250? Such a dumb move not to.
