ZX10R carnage pics

Blew up my 10r a few months back. Finally got a chance and the urge to take a peek. Damage was about what I prepared myself for, but much more impressive than I thought it was going to be.

Quick story:

Heading home from VT, bike starts running on 3 cylinders just outside of Albany. Few miles later I hear what sounded like marbles in the valve cover and then my riding buddy pulls up next to me pointing behind me, coolant cloud, sweet. Shut it down and pull over, there’s coolant all over my rain suit and back tire. I trailered it home and ignore it for 3 months.

Fast forward to monday this week.

Today, no pics of the motor tear down but here’s the stopping point.

I’m going to tear down the bottom end and see if it’s worth saving. It’s considerably cheaper to put a used head on it and used pistons/rods but then I’m not sure what caused it to run on 3 cylinders before it blew… bad injector, bad coil etc etc. I’m going to see what it’ll cost to rebuild this vs get a used motor. Unfortunately a used motor won’t allow me to financially put cams and a thin head gasket on it like I wanted. Decisions decisions…

Holy FAWK!!! Looks like it was running hot as a motherfucker in there, I’ve never seen a piston and chamber so melted. Or what appears to be melted.

Is that from long term detonation up until it just completely failed? Or was the marble sound the valve pieces bouncing around?

How long was the “marble sound” going for before you shut it down? Crazy…

That bike looks farely new. What year is it?

The marks are from the valve bangin around in there for the 1/4 mile or so it took for me to get pulled over. It’s an 06 with just over 10k on it.

It does not look melted at all to me. Looks like a dropped valve caused this whole thing and the dropped valve beat the shit out of that piston.

:uhh: good luck with the re-build

I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to do. Whatever it is won’t start until march so I’ve got time to decide. Theres a 190horse all-motor 10r engine for sale for $3500 lol. Went 8.96 with an extended swingarm.

Wow. That’s some shit. I wonder what caused the failure.

From the looks of the carnage , without looking at it better, at the very least you’ll have to get it bored out quite a bit. Not to mention a new head, pistons, rods, and the misc. BS.

swap that head on my bike… claim it under my warranty… new motors all around

lol…

sorry dude… i still vote, buy new/used motor… swap it… and make building this block a winter project… (turbo 10r?)

I wonder what caused it…

PS… … you can continue to rip on me for buying everything with a warranty… <3… this just sucks all around though… atleast you have the civic still? will THAT atleast be ready this week?

Not to piss you off but my bike has 25k and I never had to sink a dime into it except wear and tear parts

lol It doesn’t piss me off, its a freak thing, how many sportbike motors have you heard blowing up? Shit happens I guess. I know its not a Kawi problem it coulda happened to anything. Every bike Ive owned has been over 10k w/out problems. My first bike had 35k and was beat on regularly. It’ll be back next season w/ lots more hp. Maybe Ill return it to stock and buy a vette lol.

Itd be cool to have a reliable 200 whp bike, but in reality… i think a 160 hp bike with -1,+3 would give me plenty of acceleration and smiles… regardless… I like the idea of a vette and I like the idea of this thing being rideable again. As for that r6… When we did the spark plug change, that thing ran like a raped ape. I loved riding that… your 600rr was a great bike too… so much fun. Hell the zx-10r was great toooooo…

Awwww i love motorcycles… too bad i hated my only suzuki.

Fix this thing… run 9’s on it… turbo the old motor, stretch the swingarm… run 8’s… move to florida… be awesome.

*searching for video of 636 that took about an hour with throttle wide open to finally blow up. Then let cool down for a day and it started right up. (even the exhaust melted lol)

shitty, of you decide to sell it let me know. I’m looking for a winter project.

the bike will not be sold for an amount anyone would be interested in. id sell the motor, but not the entire bike. if you’ve got an unlimited bank roll the bike would be $6500 as is  lol

Well now you just have a chance to build a better motor

Suck tho on such a new bike, WOW

oh wow lol

Just saw this now. Not good. :frowning:

Seems like going with a used motor would be the cheaper option. Not to mention much less time involved.
