any one here take calc

i switched majors from communications ( wich was bull shit ) to computer science wich im excited about because its hard and theres math involved and my love for math has just been so great recently. anyways you need calc for this degree and i havent done any excepte for hs calc wich was 2 yrs ago should i take calc 1 or take intro to calc first i dont want to waste my time with shit i already know but i dont want to be lost either

If this is at UB, you shouldnt really bother with the Intro course.

Take this with a grain of salt though, I am a math major, and look at calc as pretty easy. As in I can do differentiation and inegrals with ease.

Calculus is easy. Just make sure you pick the right instructor. I preferred graduate student as an instructor.

What was involved in the HS course? AP calc in HS and calc I in college are the same thing. Even if it wasn’t AP I wouldn’t bother with the intro class, its pretty easy stuff.

If its at UB, I’d have to say Rob Busch is probably the best instructor there and to avoid the asians.

so true^^

Try to get Rob Busch as your instructor. He’s great at teaching and is a hilarious guy as well.

It depends. The majority of mistakes in higher level math courses are algebraic. If you can brush up on your algebra, you will do fine with Calculus. I hadn’t taken a math course for a year and I managed a B in Calculus 3. You pick it back up very quickly.

AND good job switching majors.

or Matt G.

its hard taking calc and a computer science class in the same semester for me at least, i get so into making the programs work right that i make no time to study for my math class and i end up doing bad like i did in the spring.

Truth.

Being as invested as I am in the CS program at UB, I would have to recommend that you don’t waste time with the intro course and go right for 141. And the idea that you need math for CS is bs. You don’t really need to know any math to make it through all of the CS courses. Your best bet is to not waste so much time working in CSE115 and CSE116, and you should ask me for the secrets to the class - knowing the right way to do something the first time will save you hours or trial and error.

thats good i think ill skip the intro im good at algebra and im transfering to ub i did one semester of genral shit at ecc and was going to do communications but its dumb as hell and a challenge would be good but do you think ( this ? is for students at UB) id be better going right to ub and taking their 1st cs course or take intro to cs and calc 1 at ecc this spring then do ub in the fall im accepted to ub i just didt make a sched yet so time it ticking for me on this decision and im paying for this myself so i think ecc would maybe be a good idea but if it doest transfer then its not any adivce is apprciated.

take CSE115 at UB, its not an EASY course, but it falls in with CSE116 very well. Beware, I’ve known a few people that have transferred from ECC, it is a big change. You’ll be taking MTH141 (calc) with at least 35 other people, and CSE115 with around 60 others. These are big classes and one-on-one time with the prof. is tough to get. The TA’s are available, if you can understand their broken english.

I’ve found that a lot of the TA’s and some profs (not all) have forgotten what its like to take an intro course with little or no prior experience. Try to get a real professor for your CSE couse not a TA. Like others have agreed, no asians for math, try for Busch.

would calc 1 and calc 2 from ecc transfer to ub with out problems

ahh it depends, there are 3 base calc classes that I know of.

MTH121 - your basic calc course, good for anyone that needs it.
MTH131 - Business calc, basic calc with some econ and business related problems.
MTH141 - (what I took) Calc for engineers, a more thourough, developmental course used as a building block for all the math you’ll need in ENG courses.

I dont know if CS majors have to ENG calc or what. Sorry.

CS majors need 141 and 142. As far as taking an into cs course, don’t bother, because what they teach in the other cs classes won’t apply to CSE115. The TA’s for CSE115 don’t have broken english, and are very easy to understand. We go out of our way to help you as much as we are allowed, because we are undergrad TA’s and we know exactly what it’s like to take that course.

There ya go man looks like there’s all the info you need. 141 is a joke, 142 is a bit tougher, doesnt actually get hard until 241. From there 306 and 309 are both easy, 311 is a bitch, anything over that just pray man.

p.s. If I have the time, I’m always down for helping out with math, I’m not the greatest tutor ever, but I know my shit.

Who should I take 306 with? Ratemyprofessor leads me to believe that they are all totally junk.

when I took it it was with a little asian guy that was the worst teacher I ever had. But I think he recognized that fact and was an easy grader.

Face facts that most profs in higher math will suck, since the concepts are advanced enough that very few really understand.

Guttman - he may suck ass at teaching, but he grades on a huge curve

306 is diff eq, right? Take it with Bloom…You won’t learn much of anything and lectures are worthless but its an easy A. I think I got over 100% on every test.

Bloom is an easy way out for many classes.

I don’t think he’ll have to deal with most of these for CSE. I did pretty bad in both 142 and 241 but 141 was easy.

Oh the negative side to a publish or perish academic environment.
