Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD

Bottom line is we won’t know until it’s over, but who do you predict will be on top?

Keep in mind this poll is public so anyone can come back and laugh at you and your reasoning down the road

I never looked into it to see what the differences were between the formats until recently because I hate to read through “huge nerd wars” online. But after some digging, I can’t understand why people would not prefer Blu-Ray other than they hate Sony. :gotme:

Engadget has a nice comparison chart HERE.

From what I can find, Blu-Ray…

  • Has more backing and support
  • Has “twice” the capacity
  • Has greater marketplace penetration

… than HD-DVD.

So explain to me why, if at all, I’m wrong in my guess that Blu-Ray will beat out HD-DVD? For some of you, yes we all know you hate Sony with a passion, but give me REAL FACTUAL REASONS not some beta max banter. Any “Sony sucks” comments will be ignored. I’m looking for REAL arguments here.

It’s also possible that both formats will live on and neither will “kill” the other. But again, only time will tell.

Please post sources for…

“- Has more backing and support”
“- Has greater marketplace penetration”

On the average (PS3 excluded) stand alone Blu-Ray players are more expensive than HD-DVD players. That’s about the only difference besides the storage limits for HD-DVD vs BD.

Better marketing for Blu-Ray from what I see.

whatever is cheeper is my guess… although you are correct, blueray > hd-dvd in the marketing department so far.

hell, I know alot of casual gamers/movie enthusiests that don’t even know about hd-dvd

heres a real world experience.

Bluray-1000.00
HD-DVD 499.00

500 more for the same picture quality?, sorry dont think so.

If you go on Crutchfield.com, you can get a Blu-Ray player for $600 but you are right, on the average, players are more…

Blu-Ray does have a lot of advantages so it has just as good of a chance. It’s pretty much anyones game at this point. Technologically Blu-Ray pretty much rapes, HD-DVD for the reasons as you stated, and the Sony marketing muscle which is quite strong.

However I’m going with HD-DVD mostly on average consumer point of view. The average person/sales person isn’t to “bright” when it comes purchaing electronics. The whole going with what’s familiar could make Blu-Ray a bit harder to adopt to non-console gamers/nerds.

Also backwards compatibility (though with combo HDDVD/BluRay players it could become a moot point.), and lower cost can make it much more appealing to the average consumer (Again as it goes on this could become an even field). Especially when it comes down to quality which is the same.

My vote is blu-ray, for the simple fact I learned in the other thread.
1 million players in homes > 200,000 players in homes.

The PS3 will start getting some good titles soon, and that will drive up PS3 sales, further distancing blu-ray players from HD-DVD.

Both have been hacked, so that’s a draw.

MS releasing a $200 HD-DVD drive was a little late in my opinion. Had they done that 6 months BEFORE the PS3 came out I think HD-DVD would be the winner but now that Blue has an 800k lead I think it’s going to start pulling away.

Doing some reading this really stood out

Seven of the eight major Hollywood studios sell films in the Blu-ray format – five of them exclusively – and 19 of last year’s top 20 movies are available in the format, the group claimed.

Here’s some more real world experience:

Bluray- 600.00, and it comes with a free PS3
HD-DVD- 499.00, and it’s just a player.
or
Xbox360- 400.00 + HD-DVD addon 200.00 = 600.00

Here’s some more real world experience:
Bluray- 600.00, and it comes with a free PS3
HD-DVD- 499.00, and it’s just a player.

Blu-ray = no porn = doubt it will fly.

Thats IF the xbox doesn’t drop in price anythime soon. 1 year on the market i guarantee it will drop 50-100 in the next few months. ps3 will be 600 for at least a year.

I think the people who are going to buy a Blu-Ray player are more likely to get an actual player rather than the PS3 because they just don’t know any better. If you walk into a Circuit City or any other store like those, the sales guy to educate said patrons is not going to be pushing a PS3, they are going to be pushing whatever brand they are told. Even IF Sony is that brand, they are going to be pushing the players, not the PS3.

Sony = Betamax

Blue ray is garunteed to fail.

  • the porn t hing.

Wrong.

That was a rumor. Vivid is producing movies for both Blu-Ray and HD DVD

You’ve kind of contradicted yourself. You say Sony has the marketing muscle but then that Blu-ray is not familiar. If Sony does a good job of marketing then people will start asking for what they know…Blu-ray.

I was in Circuit City the other day and an old guy was buying a home theater set up. He walked up to a nice big HD tv and said he wanted that one, then he said, “What do you have for Blu-ray players?” That says to me that their marketing is making some impact.

Here is some more real world expierence

Xbox360>Graphic Processor than most DVD players on the market, PS3 has not been pleasing to many people as of yet. Sony is not known for a user friendly interface in there video game systems that double as a media player. Sound quality sucks out of both, moot point, dedicated media player>>>>>>>>>>>Video game system that is doubling as a media player. HD-DVD wins in that aspect, and from stairing at both down here in sound advice, on the same monitor, HD-DVD did look better

thats because sony, like Bose like to push inferior shit down peoples throats. I dont care how big a company is and how big theyre marketing budget is, if u sell shit its useless.

Bose seems to be doing well…:gotme:

Not that I would buy their stuff but someone is. And speaking of inferior shit. Thats what VHS was. Everyone said Betamax was a better techonology but the inferior won out. Maybe people don’t like the best.

Bose does a great job marketing. I disagree with the comparison that buick gn made, bose products are overpriced and not the best. Sony makes good stuff but they do seem to keep everything good to themselves and end up hurting themselves in the long run. VHS was far inferior to betamax but it bye bye cause of sony’s desire to corner the market with the best technology.

I dont care, I already have an HDDVD player, and once I get a PS3 I will have a Blu Ray. Also, arent they supposed to start coming out with dual format discs?

format wars = we lose

You mean dual format players and yes, I think you are correct.
