Dodge Neon NYG ACR Coupe Revival

Well, I guess I will have to tell you a little story. Back in the Fall of 2005, I was looking for a winter ride, because I had no intentions in driving my nice Chrysler Conquest TSi through the winter.

I wasn’t having much luck. Then suddenly ‘Brent_Strong’ told me all about a car, that his buddy Brian had left behind after he graduated from College at RIT, sitting outside of a Frat house. He told me it was a Neon ACR, and was very rare. He also told me it was a ugly green color. At this time, I had never owned a Neon before, and had zero knowledge of such model existing. After contacting Brian, he told me all about the car. It was 95 NYG ACR Coupe, 1 of 98 made. Originally a TX car, it had zero rust, just heavy clear coat peeleage. He then said it needed an intake manifold and should run. I was completely interested. After going back and forth a couple times, we agreed on a price, $800. I went and picked up the car. As soon as I pulled up on the house, where the car sat, there was no way one could miss the car. I loaded it up, and brought her home. After purchasing an intake manifold from the forum here, I put it all back together, and VROOOOOOMM!!! Yay! I fell in love with this car. I registered it the next week, and I vividly remember the first drive I had in the car. I was going thru the gears, and had the biggest grin on my face. The steering was crisp. I had found my car. After doing research on the forums, and reading many NYG ACR restoration threads, I realized I had to restore this one, as it was no different from the others I’ve read about.

This is what it looked like, shortly after I put it on the road, in 2005.

Now, January 2008, I finally saved enough $ to get this car a deserving body makeover and ultimately, a fresh coat of NYG, by Choko

Getting to know the other fast cars in his shop, don’t be shy lol

Beginning of a long and hard sanding/dismantling phase.

Somemore sanding has been done, and many dings/dents showed up. NYG is a color that hides imperfections in the body panels very easily. Many of the dings, we didn’t see, until he began sanding, and they began popping up all over the place. Unbelieveable. I know they will be smoother then factory, when he’s done though.

Looks like somebody tap danced on the hood, lol! Didn’t see the waves until he hit it with the sander. He can straighten it, but it will take time.

Fixing my rocker panel that I damaged a few weeks ago, driving through a pile of hard packed snow, didn’t know it was THAT hard

Nice…good work

COOL. acrs are great platforms. glad to see your returning to her original glory.

keep the same color?

gonna SRT4 swap it?

Keeping the same/original color. As for the engine, I’m just putting all the bolt ons I can get for this 2.0L DOHC in there now…it scoots pretty well as of now. Turbo’ed 2.4 is a possibility, but not anytime soon.

you should check this site out allot of bolt on neon parts

SRT-4’s sound amazing, love the exhaust (or lack thereof) note.

Yup, I bought my 60mm TB from them. Great people there.

so what is the big thing with the car a “NYG ACR” does it have a bigger motor …or is it really just the green?

looks like fun

nice ACR i sometimes miss my DOHC coupe. with its arvin struts. & huge swaybars.

surprisingly enough first gen neons were a blast to rip around in.

nice Hakka’s it must be funn in the snow. RallyX that beast.

mainly the suspension and lack of luxries since its autox ready car

ill be at the shop toight working on the neon from 12am - 6am prolly.

guess i’ll be there to trying to unfuck the ooooooomni.

The ACR means Front/Rear Swaybars, 4 Wheel Disk Brakes, Stiffer Springs, Stiffer Struts, Close Ratio Steering Rack (16:1), no speed limiter, zero options typically, although some were special ordered with A/C and Radio. I think the Master Cyl has a different bore, but thats getting too technical. Also, in later years, 1997+ ACR’s came factory equipped with Koni Adjustable struts.

In 2 door coupe, you got a 2.0L DOHC 150hp engine, with a close ratio 3.94 final drive transmission, with a .81 fifth gear. Makes for crappy highway fuel mileage, but excellent throttle response.

In 4 door, it came with a 2.0L SOHC 132hp engine, equipped with the same transmission as the DOHC model. The engines were the same exact engines available in any other neon, nothing different about them, minus the transmission.

Basically, this factory option code “ACR” was a track-ready setup. From what I understand and have read, in 1995, you could only buy an ACR from a dealership, if you had a valid SCCA membership. Due to low sales, they changed it in 1996 to where anybody could go out and buy an ACR.

NYG is Nitro Yellow-Green. It was only a 1 year color, for obvious reasons. To many, it was a hideous color. Low production numbers resulted.

To find NYG and ACR together, is pretty rare. Amongst 2 door coupes like my own, there were only 98 made, under the Dodge name. Even fewer were made under Plymouth.

Now you know. Hope I didn’t bore any of you, LOL!

nice ass crack choko

nice to see the booger getting a fresh coat of snot haha. looks good, cant wait to see it finished Justin, i know it needed paint real bad!

You would notice that

haha. :2fingers:

yes it did.

from pics he posted it looked good, unless you personally seen it

then you know its had its moments over the years…

bring it to neon2k8
I’ve been wanting to go for years and since this is the last one, I’m going to try and make it.

LOL, the masking tape matches the car.
