It all depends on the combustion chamber size. Higher compression isn’t the only parameter that gains you horsepower.
There are many ways to build a SBC, and alot of power can be had using OEM GM parts, but there are certain parts that you will need to do it. Pretty much nothing from the 305 is considered desirable.
