1985 BMW K100 - Naked bike / Cafe project

Are you reworking the rear loop to be not so… “bulky?”

God damn I fucking hope so.

Yea rear hoop is gonna die at some point. Not sure ifim loosong part or all of it yet though.

Talk to @focusinprogress iirc he has a tube bender. I wouldn’t ditch it entirely, it has to function rigidity in some way. That’s what BMW would of wanted!

Nick has a crush bender from HF, so it wont really work for this tight of a bend, but i will be tieing the frame back together after i cut off the hoop, that for sure. the monoshock mounts to the side of the frame so im sure it would cause a TON of flex if i didnt tie things together good.

yeah my bender won’t work too well…honestly for anything tighter than 60* I’ve cut up old crashbars/highway bars or used pieces of parts-bike frames I have for their bends lol.

So today i decided to go get the new battery for the bike. I still had the bad battery from the contour laying around and figured id take it back to interstate, see what they say about it, and use what ever prorating i get towards the K’s battery.

The woman seamed to be having a bad day, and since i was asking for a bit of a favor, i was trying to be extra nice and extra understanding. She explained the warranty / prorating system and asked if i needed the new battery today. “No i dont, the bike is still apart, but it would be nice because I hardly ever make it down to hamburg from Cheektowaga”

She started testing the old one, found it only had 4v, went to put it on charge for a while … and i wandered off to have a smoke, figuring i would have to come back another time to get the new one

Half was through my cig she walks out with this, says its an even trade, and asks if thats OK. Uh let me think, …i figured id get like $75 credit for my old one cause its 2 years old (by mfg date) and your handing me a battery thats like $126 online as an even trade…

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY ZERO DOLLARS!

Seems massive.

So, who will finish first? @HotRodKid or @Motocrossx23 ??

its def not a small battery.

Cold Cranking Amps: 180
Width: 5.125
Length: 7.4375
Height: 6.875

by comparison an 09 Yamaha R6 battery is:

Width: 3.44
Length: 6.00
Height: 3.69

Are you ice racing this fucking thing in Alaska? I don’t get the need to have a massive battery on a cafe conversion…

Any reason why?

stock size, and the k75 and k100 series are all electric start only.

Thats a really big battery, but hell, if it’s stock size and it tucks away somewhere nicely, then

I’d like to see this done for spring man!

one of the few good pics i can find of the battery location. this is the same size battery as i have. it doesnt seam so big when its in the bike. The size and location of the battery is why so many naked K bikes have filler panels in he frame on either side of the battery.

LOL. I’m not finishing, the bike is just a bunch of metal taking up space in my garage that I want back. I’m going to title it and get rid of it.

fixed

pushed it outside so it could get some sun.

photo hack of the tail section. this is an extra 15* of rake, but im thinking 10* would be more to my liking. donno yet.

This is what I’ve settled on for the rear frame hoop rake. This will bring the top of the frame up to the top of the rear splash guard(not shown). Prob make the required cuts this weekend.

WHACK!

cut of the transverse brace, the seat lock, and both sides of the shock mount.
Checked the angle of the original frame (5* at its current spot)
Reset my gauge for 13* total
cut the frame, bent them up, and threw a tack weld on.
Double checked they are parrallel
Cut off the rear section of the hoop
Started plotting how i want to trim the wheel well

Pushed it to the open space in the shop and played with putting it on the center stand w/o using the handle on the frame. Yea that can be cut off too. If i muck the paint on the frame after multiple times of using it as the handle fuck it, its a $7 paint job

started welding up the frame. Reshaped the old shock mount to fit again but theres not enough clearance between the shock end and the frame, so ill be making new mount plates to get a proper gap again. thats the inner plate shown, but i put it on the outside because its not nearly as ugly.

this is the original outer. its extended to pick up one of the mount points for the city bag brackets, and has a grommet hole for the stock side panel.
