1991 Type X Sr20det build

Hey guys. My name is Dylan and I’m fairly new to this site, I have owned my 240sx since the start of 2011. I bought it as my first car and at the time I was 18. I paid 3500 dollars for it with 213xxx on it with an autotragic transmission and Work XD9 wheels(Which I believe originally came from this forum)

So here is a picture of when I first bought it.

I loved it. I had always wanted a s13 hatch and to have one as my first car was pretty cool. I didn’t know much about cars beforehand. When I bought the car it also had Tein lowering springs but the front struts were on their way out. My first purchase for the car were these.

They are just Megan track spec’s but I wasn’t making tons of money and they were on sale at the time of purchase  So it went from this:

It handled insanely better, I was super happy with how it handled. Although it really needed some adjustable suspension linkage so I could align it properly while being so low. I was on my way to that when I managed to smack my oil pan really good and knocked my oil pick up off. The car was flatbedded home and parked in the garage in fall of 2011. I had some decision making to do, rebuild my ka24 and buy a 5spd to swap in during the winter or to look in to a sr20det complete swap. Well I pulled the trigger on a blacktop in December.

I was super excited to learn more about cars and with the help of a friend we unclipped and bolted the dormant ka and auto transmission.

We only had the hoist for a weekend so I didn’t get to clean my engine bay up as much as I wanted to. But in a weekend we managed to swap the motorsets which I felt pretty accomplished doing since I had only owned my car for a year.

http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/424604_10150683133631075_1743747798_n.jpg

I also ordered some other small parts for the car like some 20mm wheel spacers, a Recaro SRD bucket setup, a steering wheel hub and my awesome girlfriend got me a Nardi suede deep corn wheel. I didn’t do much else because I spent all I had getting the sr20 setup and running for the spring. As the snow melted it started to come together!

http://sphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/427676_10150725109301075_499140552_n.jpg

With the new spacers making the wheels sit nice and flush I had to go down to a 225/45 rear tire from a 235/45. But I was happy with how it sat.

I had also added an OEM lip and removed my DRL to let the tiny side mount intercooler breathe for the time being. I got the car back on the road in time for spring and driving it for the first time in over 6 months felt great. Having the car run strong made me feel super accomplished and made it even more fun to drive. So over the summer I didn’t do too much to the car other than add a boost controller and gauge so I can run 10psi. I bought new tie rod/tie rod ends and replaced those and I also did my RUCA’s at the same time and took the car to be properly aligned which made a huge difference. I took the car to some autox and lapping days to try and teach myself car control. I also spent some time making my engine bay look pretty…

Towards the end of the summer when I had saved up some money I was deciding what to do to my car this winter. First up was a real IC setup!

http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/387894_10151277305111075_15853663_n.jpg

I also picked up a HKS BOV with the intercooler and piping. I got a great deal from the man himself Dylan Sharpe and I should apologize to Bing again for making him hold and intercoooler for me when I was a huge flop. Not too long after that Dylan sent me another message and told me he had some baller aero for my car and I was thinking about doing an OEM kit this winter so I ended up with…

http://sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/76206_10151277304936075_1906311656_n.jpg

Very excited about that. I am still looking/saving for some kouki tails and I even got an OEM “Twin Cam Turbo Intercooler” sticker which I am way too excited about hahah… The blue bar is a HICAS lock bar since this car was blessed with the oh so wonderful rear steer assist… lol. So with the parts piling up and the winter coming, I parked the car a bit early because of a super annoying and power robbing exhaust leak. I began the tear down again

http://sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/263562_10151290444706075_1179416036_n.jpg

A nice collection of leaves I was saving from my fall drives hahaha
http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/6228_10151290445181075_800782002_n.jpg

And last weekend a good friend and I took the engine back out of the car.

http://sphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/305514_10151302006526075_820764582_n.jpg

And then I found the bastard of an exhaust leak… a very blown apart metal turbo inlet gasket.

So that is where I am currently at guys. Over 2 years I’ve learned so much about cars and I have met some awesome people. I have some big plans for the car this winter so stay tuned and feel free to let me know what you think of my build in the mean time!

We can be twins next season. Type X for dayz

Good job man, looks like you’ve got great taste too!

Helll yeah. Go figure the two guys with black type x s13’s are both named Dylan lol.

And thanks man! I am trying to keep the build tasteful and clean

I have a few rolling shots/shots from stretch&poke I’ll post up since there isn’t much of the car not apart hah.

http://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/295217_10151199810776075_590364114_n.jpg

wow engine bay insanely clean!! great work!

where you at wasaga beach this summer?

Yeah I spent a lot of time cleaning my engine bay lol. It doesn’t always look that nice but I try.

I was in Wasaga last summer but not this year… I ran into two other s13’s, a black one and a red vert on the strip there actually hahah

you probe saw me in wasaga this year, black hatch , pig nose front end, blue work vsx rims ?

I was there 2 years ago my man.

As for the build, I haven’t done too much. Taken more of the engine apart and I’m just saving up for some engine parts to start the build. Hopefully I am able to get the prep/paint work done to the type x stuff soon as well and take care of the small rust issue on my drivers frame rail. Oh I also bought some kouki tails from Mr. Sharpe to complete the type-x conv.

got my years mixed up. I owned the coupe. vert was my brothers

thought I had seen this car before. looked good in person!

Hahah no way. Your coupe is/was(I think I saw it on Kijiji?) real nice.

Thanks man

So a bit of car related updates lol.

Purchased a set of Kouki tail lights and got a Nismo cooling panel from the other Dylan. Also ordered a bunch of small parts I needed for the engine/transmission while it is removed from the car, these include:

-Water pump, seal decided to let go on mine. I found I have a lot of coolant issues(Bad stat, cracked stat housing, dried up seals in pump) I wish that they capped the effing system at the importers.
-Tomei rocker arm stoppers and Nissan valve cover gasket(Figured it is cheap insurance plus my VC had a small leak)
-Throw out bearing since mine was starting to whine
-Metal steering column bushing, engine is out so why not
-Metal shifter bushing to tighten the gearbox up
-Mani to turbo gasket to fix my horrible exhaust/boost leak!
-I also ordered a driveshaft hanger bearing since mine has dried up and Frsport had one on clearance for 40 bucks.
-Battery relocation since FMIC

So when all my parts come in I can get to work during my Christmas holidays. Then clean all the leaked oil and coolant(turbo coolant line/water pump leak this summer) off the block and components and get the engine pretty looking to put back into the car. Next up I am putting my 300zx brakes on and doing my front suspension(Tension rods, Tein inner/outer tie rods) and hopefully get my type x kit painted and start to install… very excited for this build! I will snap some pictures of the ever growing small parts pile on my futon soon lol

Wow I’ve been neglecting my build thread!

First up, my rad panel and kouki tail lights arrived

Not much else to say about those… other than those tail lights cost too much hahah. Next up I had a friend help me repair the FRP skirts before they were to be painted. Corey(Ltkouki) has given me a hand throughout the build so I should give him a shoutout.

http://sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/576468_10151340926866075_2043061363_n.jpg

So all of my kouki panels are repaired and are being prepped and painted this week, I can cross the body panels off the list other than a wing. Next up, I got some small parts in(OEM water pump, Tomei RAS, solid shifter bushing, solid steering bushing, battery relocation, valve cover gasket and locking tabs plus a new metal turbo inlet gasket) So that brings us to the next few pictures

http://sphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/207629_10151375770951075_1873838682_n.jpg
For the record I am NOT leaving that orange gasket all over the block hahah, I will take a razor blade around the edge when I clean my engine block up. I am going to clean all of my pulleys and soak the block in degreaser to get rid of the coolant and oil that is making it look disgusting right now!

http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418165_10151375771056075_180944442_n.jpg
Turbo got cleaned up nicely and reinstalled. The heat shield will be reinstalled after a coat of bbq paint to cover up that grosss manifold.

BEFORE(Note the gasket hahaha)
http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/575231_10151302000441075_567194899_n.jpg

After, much better.
http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/6402_10151375771096075_1470964905_n.jpg

Then it was on to throwing these in
http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/66418_10151369397816075_529173177_n.jpg

Opened the engine up for the first time. Not overly happy with how dirty it is…
http://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/553307_10151369397441075_172335379_n.jpg

Installed the RAS. I removed the oil baffle as Tomei says to do in their instructions opposed to trimming it.
http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/299014_10151369398066075_1460522649_n.jpg

So that’s about what I have for you guys at the moment. A lot of things are getting painted soon as well as I am going to be starting to clean everything up. This is the list I have left:

-Relocate battery to trunk
-Weld tab on intercooler core
-Clean engine and engine bay, touch up engine bay paint.
-Order new turbo elbow and catback(Tomei elbow, HKS exhaust)
-Order brake pads rotors
-Order kouki wing
-Solder VSS wire so speedometer works again!
-Order tension rods
-Install skid plate
-Install replacement hanger bearing on driveshaft
-Install kouki tail lights and kit
-Install hicas lock bar

So I am getting closer… really only need to order brake and exhaust parts then clean up and slowly put her back together. Let me know what you guys think!

I really need to update this thread. Car is all apart again, but here are a few shots from this summer.

Next to my buddies Navan Silvia
