S13 Coupe Build | Last Update: 20-May

First off let me say that I’m not very good at the whole forum posting thing and im most certainly one of the biggest lurkers on the speed.
I’m hoping to break out of that mold with this thread.

Im also not really the best at taking pictures or documenting anything. something else I’m trying to work on. so expect the first batch of pictures to suck and hopefully the only direction I can go is up

Ive been into 240’s since early 2004 when I bought my first, a 91 hatch.
I ended up buiying two other 240’s over the years and I kept the third, also a 91 red hatch.

Ive had that car for a long time and even though I never had alot of money I ended up buying quite a few parts for it by summer '07, and I’ve only just recently decided to sell.

(the same one for sale on this site as a shell a few weeks ago)

here is a few pictures, first how it was before I converted back to stock and pulled the motor.

and after:

Eventually I ended up selling the car to someone who saw it on craigslist. He is also on here as s13kid.

At this point I wasnt really sure what to do. I had all the parts off my car - wheels/tires, exhaust, seat, struts and springs, tc rods, motor, tranny, clutch ect.

I was either going to sell everything and get into something newer, maybe an s14 or something? or find another shell to build up (one without 17 years in buffalo and the problems that come with it.)

A few weeks ago I found my shell. It was located in Kentucky but was a georgia car, it even still had a Georgia title. My girlfriend and I drove out there on a weekend and unsuprisingly this is the only picture I came back with:

I know that ususally you would have 10 pictures of loading the car on the trailer, ect. but I just never remember :gotme:

I finally got the car home and in the gargage and started tearing it down (sorry no pictures of that either) but here it is at this point:

Anyways, with the exception of the battery tray:

this car is 100% rust free. heres a few shots of the underbody:

I have already thrown my TC rods and suspension on the new car but I still have alot to go. I just bought a complete energy suspension bushing kit and im going to replace every bushing on the car. Im also going to seam weld the entire chassis while I have it in this state. I have Tein tie rods, a walbro, solid aluminum subframe bushings and all new moog ball joints to install as well as bings RUCA’s and all my other aftermarket parts off my other 240.

Heres a few of the things I have laying around to install:

as far as things to buy for this summer, definetly stance gr+ pro coilovers and a zeta III or spg depending on if I can even fit in either. (since im 6’3" 200#.) past that just a factory color respray to make it look presentable.

there may also be other things added into the mix as money allows.
im thinking a small bottom mount t-25 setup as I have been on stock power for years now and im a bit bored. (but suspension/tires is and has always been my main concern)

Im in my second year twords a mechanical engineering degree from buff state so dont expect super frequent updates but I will try my best.

Looks good!

So are you making it a track car? Thats one hell of a teardown

sweet nice coupe. what engine are you going with? are you just putting the t-25 on the ka? i had an rb25 turbo on my ka with a rb20 waste gate n it was fun till she blew to the lack of tuning lol

Thanks man, im following your E30 build and that seems to be looking good as well

I would love to make it a dedicated track car but I really cant afford a nice DD and put money into this at the same time so its going to be a summer DD that also is going to every dunnville event (already prepaid).

I went to dunville for the last two NYSpeed track days last summer and I really fell in love with HPDE’s so, seeing some limitations with the 240 I had last summer I decided to go all out with a better example this year.

Im staying with a twin cam KA mainly because of the one I have (80k orig miles, never given me a problem the last two years)
and the fact that I just recently put about $500 into maintinence (new oem water pump, belts, valve cover gasket, oil pain gasket, front main, rear main,IM gaskets, 10 OEM oil filters, spec stage 2+ clutch ect.)

here it is: dont mind the rust on the brackets and the scale on the block(this came out of my buffalo car), shes very healthy inside.

Sick dude!!! We need to hold a big 240 meet in WNY this year.

nice build. love the Ka

nice build man good luck and keep us updated.

thanks for all the positive replies everyone.:present:

So I got home from class today around 10 and decided to drop the rear subframe. It took a little longer than expected since I was alone and my smaller floor jack decided to leak a good amount of oil sometime between tonight and last week, but overall im happy with how it went.

When I first saw pictures of this 240 it was most definetly the cleanest one I had ever seen. I was even happier when I starting digging into it and seeing not even surface rust on the bolts.

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd237/jim1234664/P2070714.jpg?t=1202455063

I started off by removing the calipers and tying them to the springs. Then I disconnected the shocks and slid them off the studs in the uprights.
Other than that I just had to unbolt the E-brake cable brackets from the top of the subframe and the rest was pretty straightforward.

Im still pretty new to taking pictures while working and I apologize for the quality (or lack thereof) :uhh:

I think I got a good amount done for the ~2 hours I spent working on it tonight. The next update will probably be bushing pressing.

nice build. i really like the empty beer bottles in the trunk. keep it up.

and I thought my e30 was clean. That makes my car look like a rust pile lol.

good progress and updates, keep em coming!

haha thanks, the car makes a quite good recycle bin as well as a giant paperweight.

nice build. im down for a nissan meet this summer. and stance coilovers are awsome. i love mine!

lemme know when you are ready for Stance, i’ll have a set drop shipped to you.

kyb gr-2 is not a good lowering strut

Nice Build, definitely a nice clean car. Getting southern car is the only way to go. +1 for the nissan meet and +1 for turbo KA.
