You can either try to apply for a rebuild title through NYS DMV which is a huge PITA, or register the car in Vermont, which would be easier in certain aspects.
To get a salvage title you need an MV-907A form and the old title I believe, as well as receipts for any parts you bought to repair it. If you used a parts car you need paperwork for that too.
In NY you need to go to the dmv and fill out some paperwork, pay around $200 and theyll schedule an appointment for a theft inspection where all vin#'s on parts and all paperwork for parts will be checked. Sometimes the inspectors can be real assholes about it but other times its ok. Sometimes it takes a few months to get an inspection.
I went thru it a few years ago with a rebuilt wreck and my friend sells alot of rebuilt cars and Ive gone to the inspections with him several times. I turned in my paperwork in October and got an appointment in February.
Ive heard that in VT all you need to do is go to a sheriff’s office and have a sheriff check the car out and he’ll sign off on it. You do need a VT address or atleast a PO box though.
Since VT is right on the border. They allow you to get the vehical registered at a VT dmv because theres not many in the area. A dmv there can be a lot closer togo to then a NY one, even though you tehnally live in NY.
It’s about tax money man. When your register there, you pay tax. VT is a smaller state than us. They can use that money. It’s more revenue for them. If they aren’t violating a federal automotive law, why wouldn’t they do that? Same goes for some laws in NY which they claim to be “safety first” but really are just “money makers”. Ex: License Plate tickets, Tint tickets.
You can tell me a cop in NY is in more danger than a cop in FL (which doesn’t have a tint law)? Please.
I had my one Maxima registered in VT.
Went there, got temp plates. Told me to come back in 30 days to verify the mileage. Car ended up being a POS (got it at the auction - used it for parts later on), so I had my buddy (the local Chief of Police) send a copper out to verify the mileage on the form and sign. Sent it in, got my plates. Got my title. Done deal.
Wow… Lot of action here…
Car is still available… And whomever text me… Call me 469-1055… I don’t do Text…
Yea , she’s dirty … been sitting out under a tree for a couple years… If she don’t sell…I’ll clean it up and paint the frt end…
I’ve done 100’s of salvage cars through NYS… Simple process once you know what they are looking for…and what they are not looking for…
However… This car will not be able to go through the salvage process, because the dealer …1. is too lazy to find , and do the paperwork…2. If he did, he’d put it through himself, and will “buy here, pay here” this car…
So… Maybe the Vt thing is a option, maybe you just race it, maybe you demo derby it…But there is no paperwork…and was a salvage car…
Interested partys should call my cell 469-1055…
Oh yea, car is located in the vilaage of colonie…By Otto olds…
