1997 3000GT VR4 Project (97VR4)

First I would like to start off by saying that this thread is not going to be like some of the other threads currently open. If you have something to say or if you see something you don’t like, then PM me, do not start a seperate discussion in this thread or I will have it deleted.

I will be glad to answer any questions you may have pertaining to the car or the modifications and work done. This thread WILL BE BASED ON FACTS ONLY. I will not post Est. HP numbers or Est. times. The times and/or HP numbers will all be accurate track/dyno proven numbers. I will not post things that are not done to my car or things that will be done. The only time my page will be updated is when something new has been ordered or installed. This is a straight up no BS thread, which will hopefully leave little room for BS replies.

Thank you. Fixed.

Great to see this thread! I always wanted to know a little bit more about your VR4.

Anything new since the old pics?

I don’t really like the wheels, but the car is mint.

Thanks. Yea those wheels came with it when I bought it. They are only 17x7.5 so they aren’t really anything special, not to mention ugly IMO. But they are perfect for the winter. Narrow = Traction and I don’t really care how messed up they get driving them around in the salt and dirt so.

Car is mint and clean. Nice example.

What are your plans for this car? Let me know if I can help.

Thanks. For this winter project im only looking at doing a few things, nothing major.

New rims/tires, Ksport springs, Greddy EBC/Turbo timer, Gut my cats, and the QTP Electronic Exhuast Cutout.

Those are the hopefulls but it depends on the required maintenance first.

What are you planning for passing inspection w/o cats?

Interesting you’re going with the cutout. I was planing that route, untill I realized I would need two maps, once for closed one for open, and a software that would allow me to switch between the maps on the fly, which just over complicates things.

Any rims in mind?

As far as the CEL and inspection I am hoping to by-pass that with an O2 simulator kit. As far as visual inspections go I will be fine with the shop I use :ninja

As far as mapping the Cutout goes, I will have a map for the strip only and one for the road only. I am only going to use the cutout at race days so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Im still in the process of looking at rims. I have found a couple of good ones but im not set on anything quite yet. The search is still on…

I go to a shop in ballston spa that is owned by a family friend. I have No cat, No EGR valve or anything…passed my car with no problem. I just brought in my buddys bone stock v6 camaro, hooked that up to the computer for my car and called it a day…I turned off all the SES lights with my laptop tho

You ever think about putting a front mount intercooler on that?

I actually like those rims…they remind me of the corvette C5 rims.

I just bought a cutout too…cant wait to get that thing on.

You should be modding towards your ultimate goals to reduce replacing parts.

New rims/tires = Don’t like the stock ones? Stay away from NITTO 555. Garbage.
Ksport spings = That’s fine. I keep my car at stock height. Careful of scrappage.
GREddy EBC = Why? Stock fuel = same boost just about all the time. Might want to consider a MBC instead but make sure you get a good boost gauge. Also, you will need a datalogger. change boost and/or fuel = datalogger at a min.
Gutting precats = nightmare on 97 (OBDII)
Electionic Exhaust cutout = Cool idea. The DP is a huge restriction so you might want to consider adjusting that. Stock catback shouldn’t be that big of a gain with your turbos but you might consider catback just for the sound. The problem is the catback is pricey.

Unless he finds a way to get rid of that CEL or readiness monitor, he will have a hard time getting inspected unless he knows someone that will scan another car for him.

FMIC with stock turbos is a waste of money given the pressure drop.

you cannot scan a separate car anymore… dmv updated their system and reads the electronic vin tag in the ecu. better be your car or the inspectors license gets pulled.

I’ve wondered that myself but how do the dealerships/OEM companies handle ECU replacements? That means I cannot go to the local dealer/auto store and replace my broken ECU?

you have to have the ecu reprogrammed most of the time now to “co-exist” on 96 and newer vehicles with the body control module, ebc (electronic brake controller), tcm (transmission control module) and so on.

Shawn: With all of this CEL and emissions crap nowadays, how do you keep your car inspected? Any advice would be welcome. :ponder

Boostin: An intercooler on my car with the OEM turbo’s is actually a downgrade if anything. I could upgrade my sidemounts but since I plan on doing a turbo upgrade in the future I don’t want to waste money on the upgraded side mounts right now when I will eventually be putting the FMIC on. I wish I could do it now though.

As far as rims are concerned, seems to be the biggy right now, I can give you guys an idea of what i’m looking for. 18’s, Hyperdark or Black in color. 5 or 6 spoke with a decent lip. The staggered rims wont hurt my AWD as long as the actual rim/tire diameter is the same front to back, width won’t hurt it, but if I had a smaller side wall in the front than in the rear, my VCU would be shot in a month. If I go with an equal width all the way around I won’t have to worry about that so we’ll see.

I personally think a Gun metal 18" rims with a 2" Lip would look nasty.

did u get pulled over tonight right team gowey dodge on rt9 in latham around 5.30ish tonight? cuz i saw a white car just like yours pulled over by 2 coppers

Nope. I live up in the Glens Falls/Queensbury area and i’ve been in town all day long.
