Need the scoop on 3000gt/Stealths

Hey guys I’m trying to gather some information on 3000gt’s for a buddy. I really want to help him decide on a fast car and he has his heart set on a 3000gt.

However, I do not know anything about them really.

So I have a few questions:

  1. Worthwhile to buy a Vr-4?
  2. How easy are they to mod? Cheap?
  3. Reliability issues?
  4. Whats your overall opinion on the car?

Thanks guys, any help is a appreciated

Sounds to me like its a pain in the ass car, that will be expensive to fix/insure… Nothing about a vr4 is going to be cheap.

How old is the most recent model?

Personally I don’t like any Mitsu model anything. I’m not a fan whatsoever.

But idk maybe someone can chime in with some hands on exp or whatever.

I want him to get a WRX hah.

Vr4s fetch a high price
-awd
-turbo
-pigs

Base model/sl’s
-fwd
-pigs
-good looking but slow

The 6g72 motor is strong but the bottom end can be tempermental

Also the oil pans have a habit of denting at the catch pan/pickup and can throw a bearing, be sure to check that

Borla makes an amazing full exhaust but $$$

There are many sites to buy aftermarket parts/oem replacement

Overall I love 3kgts/stealths, I miss mine like crazy, it was a clean, fun, beautiful cruising car, only downside was lack of power for how heavy they are

My understanding of them is that they are overly-complicated, have a cramped engine bay, they weigh a ton, are not cheap to fix, and break a decent amount.

They are also very cool for what they are. Peronsonally, I’d never get one, but they are still nice cars. Look nice to boot too.

by heavy, how heavy are we talking?

3800 lbs, even more for a vert… i had one many years ago, its more of a touring car than a track car, which isn’t exactly a bad thing depends what your looking for

3800lbs @ 220hp on the base/SL models

Edit: way to beat me lol

my vr4 was 3800 lbs… i had a 91 not sure if the newer ones picked up some added weight? you sure the base/sl is that heavy?

edit

thought so…here check this out for specs for your buddy http://www.team3s.com/FAQ-Specs1.htm

Positive, I had a 94

Not sure about the 3rd gens tho, not much changed besides the front end

the faq says a 94 sl is 3351, and the vr4 is 3803. if an sl is 3800 like your saying a vr4 is well over 4000lbs, they are heavy but not THAT heavy :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmm so It’s pretty much and AWD Goat.

haha.

Hmm. Lets talk reliability. This person in mind of buying it will probably stop at a little bit larger turbo and fueling. Would this prove to be to stressfull for the engine/drive line?

Whats a better tranny, the 5spd or 6spd?

Ah no you’re right, 3800 was for vr4, I looked quick at a reprint owners manual I had in my closet haha

iirc the 6g72 motor is the same motor used in the 3rd gen eclipse gt/gts

You’re getting into mitsu reliability with a 3kgt remember…it’s a crapshoot to tell what will go and when.

Esp with a vr4, you have a twin turbo motor, something is going break and it’s gonna be $$$

IMO drive it to drive it, not worth heavy modding.

Throw a decent exhaust, wheels, keep up with maint. and enjoy having a sharp looking cruising car

Well said. If I was looking to modify a jap-box, it cert. would NOT be a 3000GT.

Oh and to answer your other question since they already touched on the modding aspect… 6 speed for the win, it has a stronger transfer case too

3/s transfer cases leak indefinitely. the seals fail every time. make sure you check for leaks if you look at one.

theyre really not that hard to work on once you know them. figuring them out can be hard.

the ecu’s have a tendancy to burn out capacitors and leak onto the board.

spun rod bearings are a common occurance in higher mileage 3/s’s

aftermarket parts arent THAT expensive but theyre in no way cheap.

The gearboxes in the 4 or 5 that ive driven have felt sloppy as hell, i would assume the same for all of them.

really they only upside is that they look hot. I wouldnt buy another one myself…

btw, only the vr4 and the stealth RT/tt are 300hp @ 3800 lbs, the NA’s are 220hp @ around 3400. AWD makes for a bit of extra weight.

Woody knows his shit.

I had a 92 VR4. I loved that car when it ran.

They look better than any other jap Supercar from that time. (fuck the haters  )

You can make a crap load of power, very cheaply, if you do your own work, and do your homework.

All cars have their qwerks, like the ones woody mentioned, but they are all “managable” for the most part. The only thing that broke on mine that I had no control over was the electronic box for the suspension, I didn’t care.

My 92 VR4 on a scale with me in it and the gas light on was 4195 on the scale on river road.

For $500 my car was running 12.9 @ 109.

That car raped everything out of the hole when the clutch was happy, the transmission was happy, and the transfercase was in 1 piece. I’ll buy another one someday. It will have all of the qwerky shit worked out of it, it will make over 600hp at all 4 tires and it will look badass.

They’re definitely hot cars,even if its not a VR4 they make a nice cruiser/DD.

I’ve got a SL and its been semi reliable,Its been my DD for the past 3 months and I haven’t had any problems.60K Maintenance’s are important, make sure the oil pan isn’t dented as its the cause of rod knock/oil starvation.
