thats exactly what a lot of people do! People that buy Corvettes do so because they really want a Corvette. They like the way it looks, they like its fairly decent performance, they like its namesake, and they like the fact that its a somewhat exclusive sportscar for a somewhat affordable price. It USED to be a lot more exclusive in the performance department too. But compare the power the C5 makes to todays market. Evo’s and STI’s were matching its performance for thousands less, the 03 Cobra would rape a C5 stock and rape its mother with a pulley. Not to mention anyone with a Honda/DSM/Nissan could have Corvette performance for less than $5,000. The 350Z and the RX-8 while not quite up to matching performance numbers with the C5, still took a bite out of its sales. So Chevy did the only thing it thought it could do, gave their Vette a slightly new look, bumped its HP way up and priced it out of the demographic it used to be in so that it now competes with Vipers/Euro exotics.
Jay, Did you have a lonely childhoood, because I sense some anger. Were you one of those kids that the parents had to tie a steak around your neck so the dog would play with you ? Or were you one of those kids that were picked on in school and know one ever talked to you ? And for you information I am not an idiot and I can fucking read, its just fun to piss you off because you are a asshole.
You think its about respect? No one is disputing the cars performance. Just giving our $.02 as to whether we think the car is worth its price tag.
MY opinion… Today’s market $70,000 is a steal for a NEW car, with it’s performance.
point taken. i definatley agree w/ alot of what u r saying. i still stand by my thoughts about the C6Z…as Blue stated, in todays market 70G’s isn’t too steep for the kind of performance that comes along w/ that car.
nothing with 4 wheels and an engine that costs $70,000 is a steal.
Nobody wanted to pay $70K for the Viper when it was the only car out there that was close to that level of performance. Now that there are lots of cars out there that can come close or match that performance with minimal mods, what makes you think that people will go running to the Vette? What they needed to do was increase performance and keep the price the same to stay competative.
Ive said it a couple times in this thread but I’ll say it again. People that are looking to spend $70,000 on a new car dont care that much about its performance. Dropping that much coin on a car is to buy yourself a status symbol. Its conspicuous consumption at its best. .01% of the people that do end up buying the C6Z will appreciate it for its true performance.
Look at it in simple economic terms. The market is flooded with fast, cheap cool looking cars for under $40K. Five years ago what was there that could give the Vette competition? Supra/RX-7/300ZX were long since gone. Pretty much everything Euro was higher in price. So the only real competition with the Vette was the F-body, which really isnt even close. Now theres all those cars I listed in my previous post plus people have a very feasable option of upgrading previously-though-to-be unworthy cars. In simpler terms, people have lots of other ways to spend their money. Higher supply = lower demand = lower price. But chevy went the opposite route and stuck the Vette out in left field. Its way more expensive than the under $40K market, but its not exclusive enough to pull buyers away from potential Porsche/Ferarri/Aston Martin/Lambo owners. They went from being the staple of a very lucrative demographic to a niche demographic out in left field.
ya, i agree. the car sorta sits in an akward spot right now, dare I say, almost ZR1 territory. i think that Chevy went directly at the Viper w/ this car. They might pull some of the higher-end customers w/ it also. Just as you show some examples of cheaper cars to spend your money on and mod instead of the new Z, maybe the new Z wil be the inexpensive alternative to a 911, F430 and obviously Viper. but i think they might blew the car out of alot of ppls price-range that had C5’s in hope to trade in on a new C6Z. that being said, I still don’t think they will have a problem selling the cars. There won’t be a huge amount of them pushed out (significantly less than the C5Z), so it does have a bit of exclusivity to it. enough to spark the intrest of potential exotic buyer??? guess we just have to wait and see.
i dont care what performance it comes with from the factory, no way in hell would i spend over 35 grand for a new car
No doubt, the car is definitely bad-ass. It has great performance, and looks hard as nails. I just think chevy could have made it cheaper, maybe used the regular ls6 and just supercharged it or something.

this thread is stuuuuupid
i’m surprised you mods haven’t locked it like every other decent thread that had a good discussion going.
I actually have to disagree with you on this comment. Most people who have bought C5Z’s do buy them for their performance value. It has minimal appearance differences from the regular C5’s. Those who buy the C5 for it’s status symbol, usually buy automatic convertibles.
You see a lot of performance enthusiasts with the Z06, mainly because of it’s tight and aggressive gear ratios. Harsh suspension, and it’s lack of options. It’s a performance enthusiast minded car. Not many “status” symbol folk, are going to drop an extra $8-10,000 over the price of a regular C5 Coupe for 50 more horsepower, and a performance suspension, minus knick knacks.
The Z06’s I’ve mainly seen are driven by people with performance in mind, and theyre usually driven hard, unlike regular Corvettes, which are an old man’s sunday cruiser.
Now in 2006, Chevy at least added all of the available C6 options for the C6 Z06, and added all of the performance options in the Z06 package, making it a well rounded car, that can steal away a good portion of the Viper market, and the $100,000 or so exotic market. It blows away the 911TT’s, and GT2/3. As well as the 360/430 Modenas, the 575M, Gallardo, and hell it even barely nudges out the Murcielago. Now granted, 575M, and Murcielago owners are not going to even consider C6Z’s as replacements.
