Was at Holiday on Monday…taught my Dad and Sister to snowboard, place was packed! I was on my own after they left and ended up just leaving after not too long. HV put up some jumps and rails right next to the bunny hill…which just encourages idiots to ride through or try dumb shit…got cut off by asshole skiers and boarders.
Not gonna lie though, I hate retarded riders in general, not just skiers (although mostly). I just hate idiots who cut people off in the park and ruin kickers or have no sense of what or who is around them.
Skiers will always hate boarders and boarders will always hate skiers, that’s life lol. I ride with awesome skiers and boarders and both sports are tough to learn. But, IMHO snowboarding is harder to get good at. (I was an instructor)
I didn’t know there was this much shit between the two lol. I started snowboarding last year and picked it up pretty easily/quickly. How difficult is it to learn to ski and get decent, generally?
That park on snoozer sucks because in order to hit that 5 foot tall booter, you either have to hike from the bottom of the park to cindy’s or sunrise, or take the bunny hill up and hike 100 feet up the hill.
My personal experience is that when i tried skiiing it was very easy to learn and pick up on, however snowboarding was more difficult. I do think that if you have ice skating background skiiing will come easy, which i did. If you have skate boarding background then snow boarding will come easy. thats probably a couple reasons why some people may feel one is easier or harder then the other. I personally prefer snowboarding because imho it takes a bit more skill.
I went out Monday Night… It was eh at best. The hills were trashed and the idiots were everywhere. I spent more time dodging morons and iffy conditions than having fun. That being said it was a decent night till I got into some rough crap a bit to fast and bit it HARD. Hard enough to make me glad to be wearing a helmet cuz I was definitely dazed afterward even with it.
im investing in a helmet this weekend, and prob wont be going for a few weeks. i got a concussion sunday @ kb and ended up getting pretty bad whiplash. i fell hard enough to get my hat which was tied around my head ripped off, both sets of goggles, one on my eyes and one around my neck, and my jacket somehow came off lol.
i was doing “ok” yesterday but a shitty skier zigzagged in front of me with out looking and i had to turn really quick (which im not that good at doing yet) and i ended up catching an edge and went down on my back and hit my head again and when i hit the ground my neck made a cracking/snapping noise and i was unable to get up
as far as skiing/snowboarding being harder than the other, i can only comment up to having a skill level of being decent. as of now i pretty much think theyre both the same… however i think there’s more fear in snowboarding as far as catching an edge or falling, which is the only thing that makes it “harder”. once you get over that, i think you’re pretty much allset and there’s so much room for improvement. you just have to get over that hump
I’d like to give skiing a try, but i feel like i should probably get better at boarding first lol. Also heading down to HV on friday with some friends. How crowded does it usually get on New Years eve?
And sorry to hear about your concussion. People like that suck.
I am actually thinking about getting rocker skis (made for powder), am I crazy? I keep seeing reviews that say they are good/decent on groomers. It just seems impossible with the funky configuration. lol
A lot of the in between powder/all mountain skis do quite well on groomers. Know a bunch of guys on kung fujas with no complaints and I have skied this years volkl bridge. The rocker is really nice on any kind of deep or heavy snow. Adding much more rocker or width does start to hamper things on the groomers. I’m a proponent of the two ski system. Luckily the powder boards have gotten a good workout so far this season.
Its easy on skis…sorry, just had to continue the debate. No hate towards boarders.
I was seriously thinking about the Bridge. You like eh? I wonder how much better this year’s are. Are they worth paying more $$$ than last years? (I have Seth Pistols that are still great, I just want something new. lol)
Well instead of making a new thread maybe someone will see it here. I picked up a bunch of snowboarding gear and this helmet was part of the deal. Not sure of make but its to big for my head. Anyone recognize the label so I can price it out to sell?
i would keep it, how far off is it from fitting? i would have to say im actually pretty good now, and i’ve only fell once out of the last time like 12times ive been out, and it was the only time i wasnt wearing my helmet. and i definitely needed it =/
I thought it was all hype but Aspen rocks! The fact that it was dumping all the way up there and the first day certainly helped but it was definately great skiing. There are four diffenerent mountains and only one had green circles. It was my kind of terrain with the biggest bowl in the country. After taking the lift as high as it would go we continued on a snow cat then hiked another 900 ft to the top of bowl. Even after the bottom of the bowl was probably another mile of off-piste skiing.
It was funny when we got to our place there were a bunch of 80 year old people sipping wine in fur coats. We said, “What did we get ourselves into?” lol We did find some cool places to hang out the next day. Serious money there though like woah. We met a girl/woman that “manages” a 14 million dollar home that is used ONE WEEK out of the year.
The cheapest clothing store was Ralph Lauren. It was like rodeo Drive in the mountains. lol
Great trip overall.
Not sure if you made any purchases as far as skis go… Here’s my thoughts on rocker…
If it’s an everyday ski that you intend on using fulltime, get something with traditional camber underfoot and an early rise at least in the tip. A fully rockered ski without traditional camber underfoot will ski like a dead fish on firm snow. I believe that the Bridge has some camber underfoot. It does not take gobs of it either.
I had a chance to rip around on a pair of next years Nordica Patron up here at work in Killington a few weeks back. Got to put it through it’s paces on groomers, icy steeps, bumps, and about 4" of new snow. the ski was 185cm in listed length with a 143-113-132 dimension pattern. The mount point was set just back from center. Traditional camber underfoot with a healthy dose of tip and tail rocker with vertical sidewalls. That ski blew my mind in the short time I had it and I was extremely sad to give it back and get on my skis (185cm Line Prophet 100s). It skied more like a high 170cm in length. It was stupid agile with the tip and tail rocker allowing it to really pivot fast. I didn’t get her in the trees as we were thin on natural base and I didn’t really want to put any coreshots into a demo ski but I would imagine that the ski would excel at the trees. The rocker also allowed the ski to perform like a much narrower ski in the bumps as the tips resist the temptation to lock into one another. It definitely did not ski the bumps like a 115mm underfoot ski. it held an edge on steep ice with a lot of confidence. When it came to laying high speed carves, it responded nicely. There is definite tip slap at speed, but I did not find that this hindered it’s speed limit and it was more than happy to run at speed.
It SHATTERED my benchmark on rockered skis with the prior being a fully reversed camber Volkl that skied on firm snow like a dead hooker. I would have NO complaints calling the Patron my everyday east coast ski and will likely try to pick a pair up for next season.
^Good info.
I forgot to mention I did ski on some rockers last week in Aspen. They were surprisingly nice in all conditions. Of course the conditions were amazing due to the two day dump. My buddies rented them and couldn’t believe the difference in the deep stuff, now they could keep up with me in the steep and deep… Dammit!
Another thing I forgot to mention was the CANNABIS BAR in Aspen!!!:pimp: (No I didn’t go there.)
