2011-2012 Snowmobile Season

^ lol. whats there a whopping 2 inches of snow out there.

Finally picked up my sled from the shop today after abusing the free storage for long enough. Full tune-up/looking over, de-gunked the carbs from sitting, new battery, new recoil starter, new carbides, new plugs, new sliders, cleared up knocking issue with the chaincase (was just a cotter pin that broke loose bouncing around in there, fixed it and changed the oil), compression came up solid, 135/135/135, so $600 later I am ready to rock. Just add snow.

In the woods yeah, there was about 4 inches in the fields some of them where out on the sleds before we took off on the wheelers.
Every ice we found we broke through. I was the only one with a winch. :fu:

Now it’s all melting.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

The conditions were surprisingly good in spots in the southtowns, even some fresh powder (and some pretty bad). Got in almost 100 miles last night (some due to the fact that John and I are terrible navigators… notice the spurs where we had to double back in the upper right of the map).

Plan was to be back at the trailer at the Milestone in Chaffee by 9:30. Pulled in at 11:20 according to the GPS logs. First time pulling both sleds on the highway with the GTO. It pulls like a champ. Honestly put my Murano to shame.

Just saw on the news that Fulton got 32" of snow yesterday. So tempted to burn a vacation day and head to Syracuse today. Heh

Yeah, I think if it get’s just a little colder and just a bit more snow, I’m gonna go. Like the GPS. You guys don’t screw around.

Trouble shooting my idle and bog issue has been interesting and frustrating. Cleaned carbs for a third time, broke the plastic breather nipple on one so had to improvise and fix that. Reset everything to stock settings and still had the issue. Adjusted fuel screw with not much improvment. Compression is still good, did a leak down (pressure test). Supposed to hold 5psi for 3 mins, by the end of 3 mins im down to 1.5 - 2psi. Took a few macgyver moves to seal the pump and gauge. I’m still not 100% sure rave covers are sealing, I cant see the bottom to tell if I get any bubbles with soapy water. Impulse line is also iffy to pinch off as the line is hard rubber so it might be letting air out fuel pump. Needless to say I have a hunt to find the leak. I really hope its not MAG crank seal, I don’t have a flywheel puller to see so if anyone has ideas for that I’m all ears. Im going to pull rotary cover to see if I pinched the o-ring and double check I set timing correct. Also need to pull clutch to check PTO seal. The way things are looking it will end up in the corner and motor will be pulled over the summer and gone through.

JayS, what GPS are you using?

We are all about the gadgets, though we still got lost. Dedicated GPS, paper trail maps and an iPhone with Polaris Snowmobile app + TomTom still can’t make up for the fact that southern tier is pretty awful about labeling their trails. That and when I’m blasting around on a sled I’m about as directionally skilled as that Italian cruise ship captain.

LOL @ “if it gets just a little colder”. We went last night because it’s going to do just the opposite. Near 50 today, rain tonight, above freezing temps right through the weekend then 40’s and sunny for Sunday. If you keep waiting for ideal conditions you’re just not going to go this year.

EDIT: GPS is a Garmin Oregon 450.
Here’s the GPX it exports if anyone wants to play. Google Earth is a great free GPX viewer. Watching the arrow draw the track is pretty funny because you can see us stop several times while we try to figure out where the phuck we are.

Next we’re going to mount the go pro on the helmet and use Harry’s Lap Timer Pro on the iPhone to get some video with speedmeter overlay.

Yeah I don’t forsee myself getting out this year. Trying to get all my shit ready and drive all the way down to that area after work just doesn’t make sense.

JayS, I wouldn’t count on the gopro doing anything decent in low light conditions. Would be cool for daytime riding though.

Yeah, it would be a daytime ride when we get video. That will require a weekend day with snow though.

I bought a Drift HD170 I was hoping to use on some rides but I guess that’s wishful thinking at this point.

so the forecast is looking horrid right now…but if we get some snow mid-late feburary on a weekend, any one up for an nyspeed ride?

sledfest is rescheduled for the 18th, maybe do it there?

The only thing I want to do with sledfest is look at where they’re going so I can go somewhere else and avoid the giant douchefest that 103.3 attracts.

I’m up for an nyspeed ride though if we get some snow.

Yeah if it was on a weekend I would probably be down to drive somewhere for an NYSpeed ride.

youre such a negative nancy lol. you still ride in your own group and you can take any route you want to get to each stop you dont have to follow their marked out trail. its a pretty good time and for food during the day you get vouchers for the stops and you get a meal at the end plus they give away a bunch of crap.

I just don’t like lots of people, especially when those people are typical 103.3 the edge gathering participants. YEAH, DISTURBED! LET’S GO 100mph DOWN THIS BLIND TRAIL SICKNESS!

I’d rather pay my $10-$15 for a meal at the end of a day of riding the trails they won’t be on.

Yep. Having gone to it a few time when it used to be at Colden Lakes, no thanks.

I used to work at Colden Lakes… Watched someone crash into 4 cars drunk, I got hit on my way out of the lot omw home from work, crashed into the bar itself, try to ride INSIDE the bar, I’ve seen it all. Fuck anything having to do with 103.3, the regular drunks are bad enough.
