Put about 100 miles on yesterday. Started at a private lot we have permission to drop at just off the 400 at Jamison Rd. Ended up in Varysburg after heading up through Alden. Lots of great riding, TONS of power. Saw lots of people complaining about getting stuck and wishing the groomers had been out to make them a bunch of idiot proof snow highways. I didn’t get stuck once and only had to help my buddy out once when he over shot a corner and ended up in about 4 feet of powder.
There were a few water holes but only one that was very deep. On the trail around 9 and back at the trailer around 4:30. The fact that we only put 100 miles on shows it was slower going breaking trail much of the time. Even in the sections that had once decent sled track I was the guy bashing through the fresh powder (while still between the stakes) just for the fun of it. Would have been an awesome day to have a long track.
Sadly no GPS track of our trip because my buddy couldn’t find his GPS.
Adding the map link to the first post. I use that site all the time.
Still really happy with the NYS Snowmobile app for my phone. It’s like the Polaris app except that it downloads all the trails so i doesn’t need a data connection when you’re out there.
The F6 tracked better but you have C&A skis and a brand new ripsaw. It definitely felt lighter and more nimble than the Rush but we didn’t ride around enough corners to really gauge the difference. I noticed the lack of torque immediately though. The Polaris is a lot more ballsy. For the money you paid and the fact that it’s RF, I think you did pretty well.
I don’t notice anything like that, I’d say that it takes bumps really well actually. Like Matt said the tippiness is what is driving me crazy. I guess it was worse on the 2010’s because of the suspension geometry, Polaris has since changed things over the past couple years. The ride last night was a last ditch effort to get out before everything melts. I have the put the sled up on the lift in the garage and tweak the suspension settings a bit. Also have a new pair of skis that will hopefully help it track a little better and some new shorter limiter straps that are supposed to help keep things a little more stable going into corners.
DO tell about this NYS Snowmobile app. I went on the NYSSA website and I think you’re talking about the $ 20.00 app. Is this the one your talking about? I’d buy it if it’s worth it. Mainly looking to ditch the paper maps and have GPS route tracking. I tend not to end up leading the group and the guy who does has a habit of getting us lost from time to time. Please let me know. Thanks.
^ That’s the one we use. Down side is it still needs data to pull down the google map tiles it overlays the trail maps on, but even if you’re in a spot with no data all the trails and where you are still shows up. We’ll usually lay out a custom route ahead of time, then when we stop for food somewhere we’ll lay out a custom route back. It works so well I really want to get a cheap android phone that I wouldn’t worry about destroying so I could handlebar mount it. We haven’t used a paper map since we got this app.
I’ve talked to the head developer of it a few times helping with some bugs and they’re really receptive to user feedback.
You do have to buy it each year though. You’ll get updates throughout the year but they release a whole new version each season. I used to spend more than the cost of the app on paper maps that didn’t work nearly as well though so I figure it’s money well spent.
EDIT: Looks like the latest version added a tracking feature.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. One on line company has some really high quality mounts and it would be really cool to just stick it behind your windshield.
OK, excuse me for my “techtardedness” but I have to ask you this Jay. When I go on my PC and locate the app it has an option to “view in itunes”. When I click it, it comes up with the option to purchase in itunes and since I have and itunes gift card I’ll never use, can I download it on my PC and then transfer it to my phone? I’ve downloaded apps before but always directly to my phone. Thanks.
Yes, if you buy it through itunes on your computer it will get loaded to you phone when you do a sync. It might even do it automatically the next time you’re on your home wifi but I’m not sure since I almost never use itunes.
You can also just load the gift card and any purchases you make from the phone will deduct from the itunes account.
I finally got all new carbides installed, as you can see, I should have done them towards the end of last year…
Got new headlights installed. Upgraded to Silverstar Ultras and it’s such an improvement. Drilled out a broken bolt that snapped off last year and also picked up a salt shield, ski runners and an old track that my brother and I installed on our double sled trailer.
Loaded my sled up after I did my final look over and it’s out to my storage spot in Wales at a trailhead.
I can see the resemblance but just don’t care. Not having 6 tons of powder dumped in my lap or 90 mph wind hitting me square in the chest > looking like the Alien. Plus when we got back to the trailer there was tons of frozen mud on the windshield that I know would have been on me with my old one that looked just like Bobby’s above.
I’m just going to toss it in the attic in case I ever want to switch back, or if I want to sell the sled to have the option is making it back into a young hooligan’s sled again.
You mean when he gets tired of being fast, comfortable and reliable?
I’ve never understood the huge windshield thing. I guess it works for the powder issue but it always makes sleds look terrible IMO.
If you are that cold, then the windshield isn’t the issue. You aren’t layering appropriately or your gear isn’t that great. Riding with a Tekvest helps too.
Yesterday, Shockwave and I*headed up north to take advantage of a little storm they got Thursday. We dropped at Winona and headed north east to Lewis county then back down through Redfield. Lots of snow, some water, not a ton of people. We did about 80 miles. Fun riding.
