It def was a turd but idk if its fair to blame Ford due to how everything was at the time. Before the last recent years every V8, I4, engine for that matter was pathetic from all brands. I’m sure if Ford did another today it would be much different than 2004.
“Chrysler engineer Chris Cowland revealed numerous new details about the supercharged Hemi engine used in the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.”
The 5.7L Hemi makes its 410 lb-ft. peak torque at 4,800RPM; the Hellcat makes 411 kb-ft at 1,200RPM.
90% of the engine parts are new in the Hellcat.
The 2.4L IHI supercharger runs 14,600RPM at just over 11PSI.
The engine flows 30,000 liters of air per minute.
It takes 80 horsepower just to drive the supercharger.
The Hellcat actually makes more than 800 horsepower, gross, but is SAE certified at the crank for 707.
There are 21,000 lb of load on each piston; they use diamond coated piston pins.
Each supercharged Hemi is dyno-tested for 42 minutes for loads up to 90% at 5,200RPM.
Special injectors flow 600cc/minute and can fill a pint glass in 7 seconds.
The 8-speed auto capacity was upgraded by 30%, using new disks.
The 6-speed manual is used in the Viper, but has internal coolers with Hellcat.
That’s allot of fuel. I see an opportunity for a custom bar tap.
I think ford made a series of terrible decisions when it came to production and marketing in the early and mid 90’s if you create a new thread I would be happy to discuss where I feel things went horribly wrong but I don’t want to derail this thread.
And what American car companies were making good choices in the early 90s?
Gm made the LS1 in '97, the C5 corvette had a hydroformed frame, was pretty advanced for its time i believe.
Also dodge viper was pretty sweet, made in the 90s.
Ford basically stopped making a good engine(5.0), and made a crappy one (4.6)
The SHO, the GTP, and the last of the 5.0 mustang is all the comes to mind.
IDK anything about the SHO and GTP, by my neon R/T was quicker than some 5.0 stangs, those were just sad POS’ in their original form, 220HP for a V8? Everyone knows that just gay. And actually the V6 made less than a lot of I4’s. Only thing that comes to mind is the Viper, 0-60 times and 1/4 times are still similar to exotics today, especially track times.
EDIT: Also the vette too with the LS1.
Heeeeeyyyyyy!
I’m a big domestic guy however
The 5.0/4.6 from the 90s was junk…
The interior in anything domestic was junk…
Domestic companies were still trying to use shit quality to get lower prices during the 90s…
SHO and GTP(And again we said early/mid 90s the supercharged GTP was 97+) were not anything special
The original comment was early/mid 90s the LS1 came out in 97 in the vette and 98 in F-body it was a big advancement for small blocks yes but by and large domestic cars of the 90s were junk.
Yea throw the Viper out there a low production car :tif:
The hellcat motor is designed to handle 700 hp for 100,000+ miles. While other motors might be able to handle that how many can take the abuse for that long without some type of upgraded aftermarket parts.
OT: The 3800 series II in the gtp is/was a great motor. Stock bottom has handled 600+hp. Can it take years of abuse and stay together though I’m not sure. The motor was honestly the only good thing about the gtp.
Upper and lower pulleys, ARH headers, E85 tune with HP Tuners, CCW wheels with skinnies and Mickey Thompson ET Street R DOT radials, aluminum driveshaft, Razors Edge Motorsports rear control arms, Nitrous Outlet 150 dry shot.
^^ From comments so I’m not sure if it’s the real mods list.
Man. What do these things weigh again? That is a lot of extra power needed to take a car from 10.9 to 9.9.
Still sweet as hell to have a reasonable amount of mods and get 9s.
I think the weight was listed at 6400 pounds.
6400?
Sarcasm
Hellcat curb weight is 4560
So pulley bolt on e85 has to be 800whp, plus 150 kit… almost 1000whp to run a 9?
It will be interesting to see if this continues. Bottle neck for production, especially with the Jeep coming on board.
